Stephen Colbert is an American writer, actor, author, and talk show host known for hosting the satirical Comedy Central program The Colbert Report.

His mother was a homemaker, while his father James Colbert Jr., was an immunologist and medical school dean at Yale University, Saint Louis University, and finally at the Medical University of South Carolina, where, from 1969, he served as the school’s first vice president of academic affairs.

Stephen’s mother, Lorna Elizabeth Colbert (née Tuck), was a homemaker. In interviews, Colbert has described his parents as devout people who also strongly valued intellectualism, and taught their children it was possible to question the church, and still be Catholic.

Stephen Tyrone Colbert was in Washington D.C. on May 13, 1964. He is the youngest of eleven children birthed by his parents. In his early years, he lived in Bethesda, Maryland but grew up in the Charleston suburb of James Island, South Carolina.

Colbert attended Charleston’s Episcopal Porter-Gaud School, where he participated in several school plays and contributed to the school newspaper but was not highly motivated academically.

During his teenage years, Colbert briefly fronted A Shot in the Dark, a Rolling Stones cover band. He had a dream to study marine biology, but a severely perforated eardrum ended his dreams while leaving him deaf in the right ear.

Colbert enrolled to Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, where he majored in Philosophy and continued participating in plays. He found the curriculum rigorous but did his best to study as he was focused than he was in high school. He later transferred to Northwestern University as a theater major, and graduated from Northwestern’s School of Communication in 1986.

Colbert and his ten siblings according to their birth in descending order, James III, Edward, Mary, William, Margo, Thomas, Jay, Elizabeth, Paul, Peter, and Stephen. They were raised in a Catholic family.

Evelyn is currently the vice president of Spartina Productions, a production company started by Stephen. 

Stephen and Evelyn have three children together: daughter Madeline and sons Peter and John. The couple are very active in their local community of Montclair, New Jersey.

He hosted his own television show, The Colbert Report, from October 17, 2005, through December 18, 2014. The concept for The Report was first seen in a series of Daily Show segments which advertised the then-fictional series as a joke. On January 12, 2015, CBS announced that Stephen Colbert would premiere as the Late Show host on Tuesday, September 8, 2015.

Stephen Colbert is an active philanthropist who has been involved with charitable works for different causes such as abuse, AIDS/HIV, autism, cancer, children, education etc.
