Brandon Dawayne Roy was born on July 23, 1984 in Seattle, Washington, United States. He is the son of Gina and Tony Roy. He has two siblings, sister Jammela Roy and brother Ed Roy.
Roy began his education at the African-American Academy elementary school. He initially took seriously basketball while he was playing for the Amateur Athletic Union, which was one of the largest sports organizations in the United States.
Roy attended Garfield High School, where he continued to play basketball and became recognized as one of the state’s best high school players during his time. His performances and skills earned him an early-entry for the 20002 NBA Draft straight out of high school. After considerations, Roy withdrew his name.
Roy did not make it straight into college after he graduated from high school. He faced challenges as he had difficulty with the SAT/ His reading comprehension was slow, increasing the time needed for tests. After working with tutors and taking the test four times, he eventually got the NCAA requirements.
Roy attended the University of Washington (UW), played ball and majored in American Ethnic Studies. For four years, he was under the leadership of coach Lorenzo Romar. He starred for the Huskies and led them to victory over the Arizona State Sun Devils on December 29, 2005, averaging a career-high 35 points.
Roy had a 2006 pre-draft workout with the Trail Blazers prior to being selected by the Minnesota Timberwolves as the sixth overall pick. However, he was immediately traded to the Trail Blazers for the draft rights of Randy Foye.
