Jordan was nominated on the second ballot by Representative Matt Gaetz despite his support for Kevin McCarthy in the 2023 election for Speaker of the House of Representatives, which included supporting McCarthy.

McCarthy was denied the speakership in the second round thanks to his 19 votes. In the third ballot, Chip Roy again proposed Jordan.

On the third ballot, Byron Donalds switched from McCarthy to Jordan, giving him a victory of 20 votes. A fourth ballot was required as a result, but Jordan received no votes on ballots 4 through 11 because all of his supporters moved to Donalds.

Gaetz renominated Jordan on the twelfth ballot. After adding his four votes to Kevin Hern’s three, there was a need for a 13th ballot. In the 13th and 14th ballots, he did not receive a nomination but did receive six and two votes, respectively.
