What are ISO files and How to extract iso files, burn and mount them

An ISO file, also known as a disc image, has the .iso file extension. It contains a copy of the entire CD/DVD disc it was extracted from. That means when you burn an ISO file to a blank disc, you will get the same files, folders, and properties as the original disc.

ISO files are used to distribute disc images. For example, iso files for operating systems like Ubuntu (Linux distribution) can be downloaded from the network and then burned to a CD to create a bootable operating system disc.

This guide will discuss three things:-

  1. Extract the iso file from a CD or DVD.
  2. Burn an iso image to disk.
  3. Mount the iso image as a virtual drive.

How to extract ISO file from disc

Extracting iso files from CDs and keeping them safe can be helpful. Let’s say you’re considering backing up your Windows installation disc. Of course, you can back up your data using Windows Backup and restore feature. But it might help if you make a personal copy of your Windows installation DVD so you can use it in case you ever lose the original disc.

To back up your DVD, you can’t just copy and paste the data inside it. You must create an ISO image of the disc so that it copies all the data i.e. files, folders and properties of the disc.

To rip an ISO file from any CD or DVD, you can use a very small and free utility (14 KB in size) called LC ISO Creator. Download the zip file and extract it anywhere on your computer. Now open LCISOCreator.exe by double clicking on it (no need to install this program).

Select the disc on which you want to create an ISO image from the drop-down menu and click the “Create ISO” button. Select the location on your computer where you want to save the image and click save. It will take some time to convert your disc to an image, depending on the size of the disc.

Once confirmed, Imgburn will start burning the ISO image file to disc. You can see the status on the window.

Once done, it will eject the disc tray. Insert the disk and it will start verifying the data on the disk. It will take some time depending on the size of the CD/DVD to verify the data.

How to mount an ISO image

Mounting an iso image simply means creating a virtual CD/DVD ROM drive that Windows can access just like a physical CD/DVD drive. When required, you can use the drive just like you would a disk without requiring the actual disk.

There is a free tool called Daemon tools Lite that does this task quite effectively.

Download and install this tool on your computer. Open it by double clicking on the icon.

Now you have to create a virtual drive first. For this, right click on the bottom empty space and select “Add SCSI virtual drive”.

Add virtual drive

A virtual drive will be created as Device 0: [G:] No media (check screenshot below). Now click on the “Device parameters” button as shown in the screenshot below.

In the DVD area, click the drop-down list and select 1. You are also free to choose any drive letter from the drop-down list. After selecting the drive letter and DVD region, click OK.

Now, right click on the virtual drive you created in the previous step and select “Mount”.

Now select Disk Image File (ISO file) from windows explorer and click “Open”.

Select disc

Now go to My Computer. You should see the ISO image mounted as a drive. You can click this drive to run it as a CD/DVD.
