In an interview, Wayne spoke about abuse aimed at officials. He revealed he considered walking away from refereeing after his wife and children were subjected to online threats following South Africa’s loss to France in November 2022.
In a statement via X, formerly called Twitter, Polly disclosed that fans threatened to kill her children and burn down her house. She spoke out via her official Twitter account.
“I’ve seen some things in the last few years, but receiving direct messages from rugby ‘fans’ threatening to kill your kids & burn your house down with your family in it over a few on-field decisions is a new low for me, my family & a plague for our entire game. It must stop now”
Barnes developed a passion for playing rugby at a younger age. He started playing rugby at the age of eight (8) and took up refereeing at the age of fifteen (15).
In 2001, at age 21, Barnes became the youngest referee ever appointed to the Panel of National Referees. He became a professional referee in April 2005.
He refereed the 2003 U-19 World Cup, the 2005 U-21 Rugby World Championship, and was the English representative on the Sevens circuit from December 2003 to March 2005
In 2006, Barnes made his Test debut, taking charge of three matches in the inaugural Pacific Five Nations. He officiated also at the 2007 Rugby World Cup.
In the 2008 Six Nations Championship, Barnes became the first English official ever to take charge of a match at Croke Park.
In the 2009 Six Nations Championship, Barnes refereed the final-day decider between Wales and Ireland at the Millennium Stadium, in Cardiff.
On 6 April 2008, he was appointed to take charge of his first Heineken Cup knockout match, between Stade Toulousain and Cardiff Blues at Le Stadium.
In 2010, Barnes officiated his first Heineken Cup Final between Toulouse and Biarritz at the Stade de France, Saint-Denis, on 22 May.
In April 2012, he refereed the Heineken Cup semi-final. He was one of the officials present at the Pacific Nations’ Cup in Japan in 2013.

He was one of 12 referees selected to officiate the 2015 Rugby World Cup. He broke the all-time Premiership appearances record (191) for a referee in December 2017.
Barnes was selected as a match official for the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan. In January 2022, he refereed his 250th Premiership Rugby match.
In the 2022 Autumn Nations Series, he refereed the match between Wales and New Zealand. It was his 100th international match as a referee.
