Willie Perry Jr., better known as DJ Casper, was an American DJ, hype man, and songwriter. Born and raised in Chicago, he was known as “Casper” due to frequently being clad in all-white attire on stage.
Casper’s first hit, “Casper Slide Pt. 1” (also known as “Cha Cha Slide”), was created for his nephew, who served as a personal trainer at Bally Total Fitness in 2005. After the song became popular as an aerobic exercise in school gymnastics and physical education clubs, Casper created a second song in 2000, titled “Casper Slide” Pt. 2″, selected by Elroy Smith at Chicago radio station WGCI-FM.
The song became a hit in Chicago in 2004, when M.O.B. Records was also involved, helping Casper create a full compilation album with other Chicago artists to promote the dance. “Cha Cha Slide” was later picked up by Universal Records.
Casper made a guest appearance as a DJ on the Season 6 episode of Orange Is the New Black, in Crazy Eyes’ hallucinating prisoners and guards jumping in line to the Cha Cha Slide.
In January 2016, Casper was diagnosed with kidney cancer and neuroendocrine cancer. After unsuccessful surgery the same month, he started chemotherapy. In a July 2018 interview, he said he was in remission. In 2019, he said he overcame liver and kidney cancer and said he’s a changed man, saying, “It’s God’s way of helping me slow down a bit. “
Willie Perry Jr. died of kidney and liver cancer on August 6, 2023, aged 58. His albums include Out Champ (1999); Casper (2001); and I Love You (2022)
