Using Shortmarks to Manage Keywords for Site Searches in Chrome (Or Any Other Browser)

Setting up shortcuts to open your favorite websites is one way to speed up your browsing. So finding your favorite websites with keyboard shortcuts will be a motivating force. So, for keyword management, Shortmarks seems like the right tool that proficient users should have in their browsing toolkit.

Shortcuts (Shortcuts + Bookmarks) increase your searchability by helping you set up shortcuts with customized site-specific search engines. You can take any of your bookmarked web pages, assign a keyboard shortcut to it, and create a custom search engine from it.

Shortmarks’ unique proposition is that it works on any operating system and on any browser. When your custom searches are stored online, Shortmarks provides you with a faster browsing experience and a unified way of using bookmark shortcuts and custom searches across all devices. You only need a Google account to set it up.

Set the shortcut

Sign in with your Google account. Shortmarks give you a long list of keyword pairs and website URLs.

You can edit an existing bookmark or add your own keyword sitelink combination by clicking Edit Bookmark. You can also bring up the edit screen by clicking anywhere on the Keywords column.

Now, there are two ways to add custom search queries to any website.

The manual way to set up search keywords for a website…

Enter a keyword for the website of your choice (e.g. GuidingTech.com) in the first box below Keywords. Give it a descriptive name. The process of adding a search URL to populate the Search Links box is similar to what is explained for Mozilla keyword searches. Perform an arbitrary search on the site of your choice and copy the search URL into the Search Links box. Replace the keyword you used with %s in place of any search term. Click Save.

Every browser allows you to set the default search engine. For the browser of your choice, use Shortmarks.com as one. You can now use Shortcut keywords with your search query to perform site-specific searches. Otherwise, you have to take the longer route to get to Shortmarks.com and use the shortcuts in its search box.

How to Bookmarklet to set up search keywords for websites…

This is a less tedious and recommended way to set up your custom searches. After installing the bookmarklet, browse to the website you want to add and click Add to Short Bookmark. This takes the title from the page and adds the link as a direct link. To add a site as a search engine, search for SHORTMARKS (all caps) on the site you want to add, then click the little bookmark on the results page.
