Top 8 Ways to Manage YouTube Recommendations

Most YouTube users rely on the default Home tab to check out the latest trending videos on the platform. Normally, YouTube is very subtle with its recommendations, but sometimes you can come across unrelated videos on the Main Menu. If you often find unnecessary YouTube videos on the main menu, check out the best ways to manage recommendations.

Before we discuss managing recommendations on YouTube, let’s first understand how the company’s algorithm works and what factors it uses to display videos on the Main Menu.

How do YouTube recommendations work?

YouTube relies on your search and viewing history to recommend videos with similar topics. YouTube also shows videos based on your subscription. If you subscribe to cooking channels, you can find similar videos on the Home tab. Thankfully, YouTube offers several options for customizing video recommendations. Let’s check them out.

1. Show your disinterest in unnecessary videos

You can tap ‘Not interested’ for unrelated videos and instruct YouTube not to show similar videos. This is the way.

Step 1: Open the YouTube app on your phone.

Step 2: Tap the three vertical dots menu next to the video and select ‘Not interested’.

Repeat the same for all such videos and you won’t see the same thing in the future. Please note that it may take some time before YouTube learns your input.

2. Turn off Suggest videos from a specific channel

If you come across below-average channels spreading misinformation and fake news, stop recommending videos from that channel.

Step 1: Launch the YouTube app on your phone.

Step 2: Whenever you come across YouTube channels that are below average, tap the more menu next to the video.

Step 3: Select ‘Do not recommend channels’.

YouTube won’t re-recommend videos from the channel to you.

3. Remove individual videos from your Watch History

YouTube uses your watch history to recommend similar videos in the Home tab. You can delete videos you’ve watched on that topic to stop getting recommendations in the future. Go through the steps below.

Step 1: Open YouTube on your phone and move to the Library tab.

Step 2: Tap ‘View All’ next to History.

Step 3: Tap the three-dot menu next to the video and tap ‘Remove from watch history’.

Repeat the same for all such videos and delete them from watch history.

4. Remove individual searches from your Search History

As we mentioned above, YouTube also shows video recommendations based on your search history. You’ll need to remove unrelated individual searches from your YouTube search history.

Step 1: Launch the YouTube app on your phone and tap the search icon at the top.

Step 2: Long press a search term and tap Delete.

You’ll need to remove unnecessary searches from your YouTube search history to stop receiving suggestions on similar topics.

5. Pause YouTube Search and Watch History

If you’re searching for a specific topic on YouTube and don’t want recommendations based on that topic in the future, you can pause your YouTube search and watch history on your phone. This is the way.

Step 1: Launch the YouTube app and tap on your account photo in the top right corner.

Step 2: Click on Settings.

Step 3: Select ‘Manage all history.’

Step 4: Tap ‘Save your YouTube history.’

Step 5: Tap Off and YouTube will turn off your search and watch history.

Now you can browse through videos without worrying about getting similar recommendations in the future.

6. Use YouTube Incognito Mode

If you don’t want to go through the lengthy steps above, simply turn on incognito mode on YouTube to browse videos privately. YouTube will not save your search and viewing history while in incognito mode is active.

Step 1: Open the YouTube app and tap on your profile icon in the upper right corner.

Step 2: Tap ‘Enable Incognito’.

However, incognito mode has one major limitation. If you’re already subscribed to YouTube Premium, the benefits won’t apply here. You will see ads while browsing videos.

7. Using YouTube Guest Account on Smart TV

Your guests or little ones can use your smart TV’s YouTube account to check out their favorite creators. If you don’t want them messing with your video recommendations, turn on YouTube guest mode on your TV before handing over the controls.

Step 1: Open the YouTube app on your TV.

Step 2: Select the side menu and click on your account.

Step 3: Turn on Guest mode and start browsing.

8. Check your registration again

YouTube also recommends videos based on your subscribed channels. You should double check your subscribed YouTube channels and unsubscribe from irrelevant ones.

Step 1: Open the YouTube app and tap the Subscribe menu in the bottom bar.

Step 2: Tap All. Select the bell icon next to the channel and tap Unsubscribe.
