Top 3 Ways to Reduce Video Size on iPhone

The Apple iPhone is great at recording videos in Full HD and 4K resolutions. However, the reality is difficult when you want to share those videos because they are too large in size. Popular messaging apps and email services like Gmail and Outlook limit videos to just a few MB. You must compress the video before sending it to your loved one. Here are the best ways to reduce video size on iPhone.

There are several ways to compress video files on iPhone. We’ll first show you how to check the video file size in the default Photos app, and move on to the best ways to compress it for seamless sharing.

Check video size on iPhone

With iOS 15, you can now check the size of photos and videos from the Photos app. Here’s what you need to do.

Step 1: Open the Photos app on your iPhone.

Step 2: Choose any video. Click the info button (i) at the bottom to check the video size.

Step 3: You can see the 75MB video file in the screenshot below.

Compress it on iPhone using the trick below.

1. Compress videos with third-party apps

If you don’t want to use Google Photos to compress a video file, use a dedicated third-party video compression app from the App Store. While there are several video compression apps in the App Store, we found one called ‘Video Compressor’ to be quite edgy and it works as advertised.

Step 1: Download the ‘Video Compressor’ app from the App Store.

Step 2: Open Video Compressor app and allow access to all photos on iPhone.

Step 3: Check all your photos and videos with file size. Select a video you want to compress. We have selected a video file that is 71MB in size.

Step 4: Press ‘Compress’ at the bottom. You have three options to choose from.

Low quality video: Option to reduce video size by more than 80%. For example, choosing a 100MB video file will reduce the video size to about 20MB.

Medium quality video: Compress video size from 30% to 80%.

High quality video: Reduce video size only from 10% to 30%.

You can also choose custom settings and enter a specific percentage to reduce the video size.

Step 5: Select a relevant option. We selected the ‘High Quality Video’ option.

The app compressed a 71MB video to 30MB in seconds. Open the video and you can add music, sound, text, stickers and play with other effects. Tap Exporter and save the compressed video file on your iPhone.

2. Reduce video files with Google Photos

If you use Google Photos to upload photos and videos, you can easily adjust your upload quality settings and save compressed videos online. Follow the steps below.

Step 1: Download Google Photos from the App Store.

Step 2: Open Google Photos and sign in with your Google account.

Step 3: Tap on your profile picture in the top right corner and select the ‘Backup turned off’ option.

Step 4: It will open Backup and Sync Settings menu. Tap ‘Space saver’ and tap ‘Confirm’.

Google Photos will initiate the media upload over Wi-Fi (or mobile data, if you have permission enabled).

Step 5: Once the upload is complete, you can access the compressed video file from all your devices (via Google Photos).

In our testing, we compressed a 75MB video file to 3.8MB using Google Photos. Your reduced video file is ready to share on social networks.

3. Reduce video size in WhatsApp

When you share a large video on WhatsApp, the service compresses the video before sharing it with the recipient. You can create a WhatsApp group with yourself and share videos in the same group to reduce the video size.

Step 1: Open WhatsApp on your iPhone.

Step 2: Choose your personal group.

Step 3: Click the + icon in the lower left corner.

Step 4: Select Photo & Video Gallery.

Step 5: Click on the video you want to compress. Press the send button.

Step 6: Open the video in the WhatsApp chat. Click the share button.

Step 7: Click Save to download the compressed video on your iPhone.

Open the Photos app and check the video size (refer to the steps above). In our testing, WhatsApp reduced a 70MB video to 1.5MB. That also shows that WhatsApp compresses heavily when transmitting videos. It’s very efficient and does the job without downloading third-party apps from the App Store.
