Timelines are an effective way to show the chronology of events, whether it’s a simple team project or a historical timeline. Compared to plain text, a graphical timeline makes things easier to understand. Google Slides allows you to create timelines, and the process is pretty simple and doesn’t take much time.
There are three ways you can go around with it. You can use the native method to create a timeline in Google Slides. Or, you can use Add-ons if you want to push things up a few notches.
So without further delay, let’s see how to create a timeline in Google Slides.
1. Create timelines in slides with templates
Google Slides has a wide range of templates that will make it easy to choose one to start with. Currently, there are 4-5 types of timelines that you can choose from. However, these patterns are basic and not as sharp as you’d like. However, if that’s what you need, then you’re good. Also, you can customize them to some extent.
Step 1: Open a new slide and click Insert. Select Diagram from the menu.
This will open all the available template types.
Step 2: Choose a color from the drop-down list at the top. Also, choose the number of days as well.
By default, Slides gives you a default option of 4. However, you can go up to 6.
Step 3: Once done, click on the timeline that best suits your project.
As noted earlier, Slides allows you to customize the timeline diagram to some extent. For example, you can drag on edges to stretch the timeline. Moreover, you can also change the color. Just select a specific section and click on the Colorize option.
Now, all you need to do is add relevant text, and that’s about it.
2. Create Timelines in Google Slides with Add-Ons
As noted earlier, the original timeline graphics are simply not sharp. If you want the graphics of your presentation to match the quality of your work, you may want to consider some add-ons that allow you to work with timelines.
Add-ons like Lucidchart (check out the best LucidChart alternatives) and SlideKit Templates let you explore different chart types for timelines. As noted earlier, these diagrams look sharp and are sure to add value to your slides.

1. Use SlideKit Templates
Step 1: Click Add-ons at the top and select SlideKit Template from the menu. Next, select Insert Slide.
This will display all the popular infographics that SlideKit has available.
Step 2: Search with the term ‘Time’ to separate all slides related to the timeline. Once you’ve narrowed down your selection, click one to insert the slides.
From now on, you can edit the text and color of the graphic according to your choice.
The SlideKit template is a free add-on and features a mix of free and paid graphics. The only problem is that you have to credit the producer in your slides.
2. Use LucidChart
LucidChart is one of the popular diagramming tools. It includes a lot of tools and templates, making the flowchart creation process easy. One of the key differences between the SlideKit Templates and LucidChart integration in Google Slides is that the latter allows you to import your custom diagrams.
You can create a timeline on Lucidchart and then import it into your slides. Cool, right? Of course, you’ll need to sign in with the same account on both.
Step 1: Open LucidChart, click New > LucidChart and select ‘Create from Template’.
Step 2: Next, search for Timeline in the Search Box. Once you choose the one you like, click Use Template.
Now, edit the template according to your requirements. Since it’s a diagramming tool, you’ll be playing with a lot of elements.
Once done, save your diagram.
Step 3: Go to Google Slides and click on Add-ons. Choose LucidChart > Insert Chart.
After a few seconds, all your diagrams will be available in your right panel. Select one and press the Insert button.
The Timeline diagram will immediately be added to Google Slides. Well, you can thank me later.
3. Create Timelines in Google Slides with Native Options
Finally, you can use Google Slides’ native drawing elements to create a timeline. Yes, no kidding. Of course, you won’t get interactive elements like the one above. But as they say, creativity is key.
