Google Docs is one of the most popular and functional online word processing applications available today. I often use it to write useful tutorials for GT. When thoughts pass through your mind faster than you type, you tend to make typos. Luckily, Google Docs comes with a built-in spell checker. For some weird reason, spell check isn’t working in Google Docs for some users.
Note that some browsers like Firefox and Chrome also have a spell checker built in, but they don’t work inside of Google Docs. The Google Docs menu overrides the browser’s right-click menu options. Here are some solutions to fix spell check not working in Google Docs.
Let’s get started.
1. Reload the Documents page
Here is a simple trick that can fix web applications related to errors. Press the F5 button on your keyboard to refresh the page. See if spell check works.
2. Enable spell check
This feature can currently be disabled in Google Docs. A recent update released by Google may have disabled it. Either way, make sure. Click Tools in the menu, and under Spelling and Grammar, turn on Show Spelling Suggestions and Show Grammar Hints.
You will notice that there is a keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Alt+X that will automatically check spelling and grammar. Try that as well.
3. Format error
Did you copy text from somewhere else? There may be code or formatting errors in the text that cannot be seen otherwise. To remove it from the text, right-click the Document page anywhere and select Paste without formatting.
You can also use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+V. Check if the spell check feature in Google Docs can detect typos now.
4. Try another browser
I’m not sure what browser you’re using, but Chrome seems to be the most popular and widely used browser in the world today. Either way, your browser may be the culprit. A simple way to find out is to open the same Google Docs file in a different browser. You can try Brave, Opera, Firefox, Vivaldi or any other browser you like.
If the error persists, your browser is innocent. If not, you know what to do — use another browser or keep reading for a solution.
5. Incognito Mode
Let’s say that the Chrome browser is acting weird while the Google Docs spellchecking works just fine in Firefox. Open the same Google Docs in Chrome’s Incognito Mode now. Most browsers offer a similar feature. If you don’t see spellcheck working, it’s possible that one of the extensions is faulty.
If you still see the Google Docs Spell Check not working message, skip to point 6 below. If it works, jump to point 7.
6. Disable Extensions or Add-ons
Chrome calls them extensions while Firefox calls them Add-ons. Either way, they can mess with your browser functionality. Most extensions are automatically disabled in Incognito mode, as we saw above. Open the extensions page from the menu and disable them all at once.
Disable all extensions and check again. Spell check in Google Docs should work now. So how do you know which extension is to blame? Activate half of them at once and test again. Depending on how spell check works, you’ll know which part is causing the error. Activate the other half and keep doing it until you find the culprit. Remove that extension. You can also try the extension manager to help with this.
Note:
7. Browser data and cache
Old data files or caches can get in the way of how Google Docs works. Open the browser and click Settings in the Menu.
You will find the option to Clear browsing data in the Privacy and security tab.
You must clear cookies and cache files here. Selecting All Time from the drop-down menu will select all cookies stored on your computer. You don’t want to delete your browsing history, otherwise it will delete all your favorite websites as well as those you have visited since installing the browser.
Click Clear data now. Note that you will have to log in again to open the web pages. Be sure to save all browser work before performing this step.
8. Automatic manual correction
If Google Docs’ spell check can’t underline a misspelled word, you can try manually correcting it. Right click on the misspelled word and you will see a few suggestions.
If you think you’re right or the Document doesn’t understand the term, you can Add the term to the dictionary from the same menu. It’s a temporary solution and may not work for everyone.
9. Mobile App Users
If you’re having this problem in the Google Docs mobile app, I can suggest several solutions. First, check to see if there are any updates available in Play or the App Store. Second, you will clear app data and app cache files. Open Settings and under Application Management, find Google Docs.
Click on Clear data here and select both Clear all data and Clear cache options.
10. Language Settings
Did you set the correct language in Google Docs? Click File, select Language to check and then select one.
You can only select one language at a time, so you’ll have to switch that language every time you’re working on a file in a different language.
11. Grammar
If you still can’t get Google Docs to work, you’ll be glad to know that Grammarly was recently updated with an add-on made specifically for Google Docs. It is currently available on Google Chrome. That means it will work on other Chromium-based browsers as well, so check if you’re using one.
Spell it
A good writer will always reread his/her work for errors, but it’s very easy to monitor your own. Also, a spell checker can save a lot of time. One of the solutions mentioned above will fix the spell checker not working in Google Docs issue. If not, try Grammarly until you figure that out.
