The Unmatched Achievements of Dua Lipa

Dua Lipa (born 22 August 1995) is a singer and songwriter from England and Albania. Her mezzo-soprano vocal range and disco-inspired production have garnered critical acclaim and media attention. Throughout her career, she has garnered numerous awards, including six Brit Awards, three Grammy Awards, and two Guinness World Records. In 2021, she was named to the Time 100 Next list.

Before getting a music contract with Warner Bros. Records in 2014, Lipa worked as a model. Her eponymous first album, released in 2017, debuted at number three on the UK Albums Chart and yielded the popular singles “Be the One,” “IDGAF,” and the UK number-one single “New Rules.”

Who is Dua Lipa?

Dua Lipa was born in London, the eldest child of Kosovo Albanian parents Anesa (née Rexha) and Dukagjin Lipa from Pristina, FR Yugoslavia (now Kosovo). Her parents are Muslim. She is of Bosniak ancestry through her maternal grandmother.

Her ancestors can also be traced back to Peja, Kosovo. Her grandfathers were both historians. She has a brother named Gjin and a sister named Rina. Lipa was influenced musically by her father, who was the lead vocalist and guitarist for the Kosovan rock band Oda. At home, her father continued to play music, including his creations as well as songs by David Bowie, Bob Dylan, Radiohead, Sting, The Police, and Stereophonics. Dua Lipa began singing when she was five years old.

Lipa grew up in London’s West Hampstead. She went to Fitzjohn’s Primary School, where she learned to play the cello. The teacher told her she couldn’t sing when she auditioned for the school chorus. She began weekend singing classes at the Sylvia Young Theatre School when she was nine years old. Lipa moved to Pristina with her family after Kosovo declared independence in 2008. She went to Mileniumi i Tret School, where she learnt more about the Albanian language and contemplated a musical career.
