The following day, he played in his first NHL game against the Buffalo Sabres. Prior to the start of the postponed 2020–21 North American season, Lindström decided to return to his former Swedish club, Almtuna IS of the Allsvenskan, on loan.

The Red Wings and Lindström agreed to a two-year, $1.7 million contract agreement on July 26, 2021. He played in 36 games for the Red Wings in the 2022–23 season, recording one goal and seven assists.

Lindström and the Red Wings agreed to a one-year contract extension on July 1st, 2023. He was exchanged for Jeff Petry by the Montreal Canadiens on August 15, 2023.
