Lipa was influenced musically by her father, who was the lead vocalist and guitarist for the Kosovan rock band Oda. At home, her father continued to play music, including his creations as well as songs by David Bowie, Bob Dylan, Radiohead, Sting, The Police, and Stereophonics. She began weekend singing classes at the Sylvia Young Theatre School when she was nine years old. Lipa moved to Pristina with her family after Kosovo declared independence in 2008. She went to Mileniumi i Tret School, where she learnt more about the Albanian language and contemplated a musical career.

For the first time, a female artist garnered five nominations.
