Tan registered for a McKinsey & Company event in Malaysia even though she had no idea what the company did.

Tan and Anthony Tan, a classmate at Harvard Business School, worked on a business proposal for what would eventually become GrabTaxi, a mobile app that connects taxi seekers directly with taxi drivers closest to their location in the chaotic Malaysian urban environment.

Tan’s experiences with a lack of safety in Malaysia served as a source of inspiration. She and her mother created a “manual GPS system” to track where she was when returning home while she worked at McKinsey.

Tan made sure her mother knew how far away she was by sending her the license plate numbers from her car and pinging her whenever she passed any significant landmarks.

Because Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia was the top result for a few pages when you searched “World’s Worst Taxi” back in the day, her mother would stay up every night watching for her to return home.

The two won $25,000 for placing second with their company proposal in the 2011 HBS New Venture Competition.

The mobile application, then known as MyTeksi, was introduced by Tan Hooi Ling and Anthony Tan in June 2012 using money earned from the competition and their own resources.

Despite the fact that the company was founded by the two of them, Tan was required to return to McKinsey after graduation in order to fulfill the terms of the consulting company’s sponsorship of her studies.
