Rashard Mendenhall career

The Pittsburgh Steelers selected Mendenhall with the 23rd overall choice in the first round of the 2008 NFL Draft. ESPN ranked Mendenhall as the 30th-best rushing back in the NFL before his rookie season.

Mendenhall and the Steelers reached a five-year, US$12.55 million deal on July 25, 2008, with a $7.125 million guarantee. In addition to returning kicks, he was supposed to support Pro Bowl running back Willie Parker.

In Pittsburgh’s third preseason game against Minnesota, Mendenhall fumbled twice; the reason given was that he was getting used to the NFL’s quicker playbook.

Until the team’s next game, Mendenhall had to carry the ball everywhere he went. In the Steelers’ last preseason game, he fumbled again, but he worked with running backs coach Kirby Wilson to correct the issue.

Mendenhall was the youngest player on the Steelers going into the 2008 regular season. In addition to his running back position, he also assumed return duties.

When Willie Parker was hurt heading into the fourth week of the 2008 season, Mendenhall was able to start his first game in the NFL.

After being struck by Baltimore Ravens defender Ray Lewis in the third quarter, Mendenhall was forced to exit the game with a fractured shoulder. Mendenhall had gained 30 yards on 9 runs.

Mendenhall spent the rest of the season on injured reserve. 58 rushing yards on 19 carries and 115 yards on six kick returns marked the end of his rookie campaign.

Mendenhall started in place of an injured Willie Parker during the fourth week of the 2009 campaign. He kicked off his NFL career against the San Diego Chargers, rushing for 165 yards and two scores.

The Packers’ scoring drive was aided by Mendenhall’s fumble in the fourth quarter, which contributed to the loss.

Only twice in 15 games did Mendenhall carry for more than 100 yards in 2011. It was a challenging season for him. Mendenhall, however, averaged 4.0 yards per carry and scored nine touchdowns.

On the penultimate play of the first quarter of the 2012 regular season, Mendenhall left the game against the Cleveland Browns due to a knee injury. He was promptly put on the IR list once it was found that he had torn his ACL. Mendenhall ran for 928 yards by the end of the year.

After being inactive due to uneven play, Mendenhall was suspended by the Steelers organization for a game against the Dallas Cowboys on December 12, 2012, for missing a game against the San Diego Chargers.

On March 13, 2013, Mendenhall inked a one-year deal with the Arizona Cardinals that may have a value of up to $2.5 million. Mendenhall would ultimately lead the Cardinals in running touchdowns with eight.

At the age of 26, Mendenhall announced his retirement from the NFL in March 2014, saying; “Football was pretty cool, but I don’t want to play anymore. I want to travel the world and write!”
