He graduated from college with a degree in Criminology in 1986. He was named ASU On Deck Circle Most Valuable Player, of which Paul Lo Duca, Distin Pedrola, Ike Davis and Willie Bloomquist have all been recipients.

Bonds was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates as the sixth overall pick of the 1985 Major League Baseball draft. He initially played in the minor leagues of Carolina League and Pacific Coast League. He was named player of the month in July 1985.
