Richard Hu Bio, Parents, Wife, Children, Siblings, Net Worth: Singapore’s politician and longest-serving finance minister, Richard Hu officially known as Richard Hu Tsu Tau has reportedly died.
As a politician and a member of the People’s Action Party, Dr Hu first entered politics contesting in the 1984 General Election representing Kreta Ayer constituency, where he was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP).
Thereafter, he became the first Member of Parliament (MP) to be appointed to the Cabinet after his election win and was named Minister for Trade and Industry.
In 1985, Dr Hu concurrently became the Health Minister, a role which he held until 1987, and the Finance Minister, a portfolio he held from 1985 to 2001 (16 years).
The death of Richard Hu was disclosed by the Deputy Prime Minister of Singapore, Lawrence Wong in a post via his verified Instagram account on Friday, 8 September 2023. He wrote
“My deepest condolences to the family of Dr Richard Hu.
Dr Hu was our longest serving Finance Minister. He stewarded our finances well, and provided a steady hand to steer our economy through the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis.
He had served as a director on the boards of both the MAS and GIC when they were formed. Over many years, he provided exceptional service to the two organisations, always fulfilling his duties with professionalism and grace.
He was the Finance Minister when I joined @mof_sg in 1999. I remember working on a Budget where he asked us to get information on the prices of some key essential items at the wet market, so as to get a better feel of the cost of living pressures that people were experiencing then.
That’s what I remember of Dr Hu — not just thinking about policies in abstract, but making sure that policies led to tangible improvements in people’s lives. In his quiet and humble way, he has served Singaporeans with distinction, and made Singapore a better place for us all”
