The Internet Archive is doing God’s work. In fact, the work of digital librarians. It hosts websites and programs for the greater good of humanity. So you can go back and see what the Google homepage looked like in previous years (Spoiler alert: surprisingly similar).

And now, the Internet Archive has done it again. Bring thousands of DOS, Arcade and Console games from the 80’s and 90’s right into your browser window.

This means you can not only play DOS games like Prince of Persia, but also coin based arcade and console games from years past like Mortal Combat, Sonic the Hedgehog, etc.

DOS Game Archive

Visit this page for DOS-based games. They are being emulated in your browser, so loading will take some time. After that, the experience is quite smooth. Given that the computer you’re using is tens or hundreds of times faster than a computer from the 80’s (thanks Moore’s law), there shouldn’t be any performance issues.

If you run into any issues, they’ll be code-based. Check the site’s FAQ for help.

Now, here are some of my favorite DOS games, the ones I remember playing on my dad’s office computer (we didn’t have a PC at home in the 90s).

Compared to what kids spend in Arcades, spending on smartphone games seems tiny, even those with in-app purchases.

You can relive the glory of the claws by playing Pac-Man, Berzerk, Hangman, etc.

Console games

If you grew up with a gaming console in the 80s or 90s, you’re a lucky man, aren’t you.

Remember those crazy button presses, leaning over with the controller, getting angry, calling your brother a cheater and running out of the living room? Ah, Sunday morning.

Some of the most fun and frustrating console games from the Atari and Sega eras are now available to play online.

Here are just some of them:

  • Mortal Kombat (full set)
  • Aladdin
  • Sonic Hedgehog
  • street fighter
  • Opposite (!!!)
  • road rash

What’s your favorite 90s game?

If you lived through the 90s, you’re bound to have a favorite pixel game. Is it Mortal Kombat? On the contrary, perhaps? Let us know in the comments below.
