Make Your Rooted Android Phone Completely Ad Free

ad blocking

Most of the great Android apps are free. But they come with a price – advertising. There are all kinds of them. Banner ads never go away, flash ads take up the entire screen, and windows pop up at the least expected time, causing you to open them by mistake. Then there are sensible ads that only show up in the pause or settings menu.

If that’s not you, advertising is what pays the developer bill. That’s what helps them make great software (and helps us bring you this website). But luckily, we don’t live in the world of 1984. If you think the ads are too annoying or outright bad, you can choose to remove them.

Last year, Google completely removed ad-blocking apps from the Play Store. After all, they can’t sell ads and ad-blocking apps on the same platform.

If you are rooted, you can block all ads. From system-level in-app ads to pop-ups to in-browser ads. And AdAway is the best way to do it.

Download Third Party App Store

There was a time when ad blockers were allowed in the Google Play Store. That was before it was called the Play Store. Now, we need to look for alternative methods.

The method listed below uses a third-party app store, but you can directly download the latest apk from this site if you want. The advantage of downloading from the app store is easy and timely updates.

To download an ad blocker, we need to download a third-party app store first. I will use F-Droid.

F-Droid is now installed.

Downloading AdAway

Open the F-Droid app and search advertisement. Open it and tap + to download the latest apk. You can choose a previous version from the list below if you want.

Set up AdAway

When you open the app for the first time, it will ask for root permission, tap ALRIGHT to grant access.

You will now need to download the archive files before you can enable ad blocking. Touch Download the file and apply ad blocking button to start. The application will download and apply the hosts files in just a few seconds. Ad blocking has now begun.

You will get a pop-up asking you to reboot. You can do that if you want but it’s not really necessary.

From Menu -> Scan for adware you can scan the apps on your system with fake ads and push notifications that AdAway cannot block. It’s best to delete these apps.

If you know what you’re doing, the app has pro features that allow you to white/blacklist your hosts files and you can even add your own hosts files to the block list.

As you can see in the before-after snapshot above, AdAway does its job perfectly well.

Replace

I’ve been using AdAway for over a year now and it’s by far the best service out there. But if for some reason it doesn’t work well on your device, try Adblock Plus for Android. It doesn’t require root and isn’t nearly as good at blocking ads as AdAway but it works.
