Mac: Quickly Get GIF of iOS or Android Screen Recording

GIFs are everywhere on the internet. It seems like a day doesn’t go by without seeing someone. But creating a GIF, especially what’s happening on your mobile device, is especially hard. That’s completely not possible on Android or iOS. You need to link them to a computer. And even then, it’s a multi-step, sometimes multi-application process to finally get a GIF of the screen recording. Now, if you’re using a Mac, that process will be a lot shorter. How short exactly? Just press a short button.

If you are a developer/designer, this is great news for you.

Android Tools is a free and open source application hosted on Github. Just go to this page, download the latest release, install it like any other app and we’ll get started.

Record your Android/iOS screen and turn it into a GIF

This is so simple, almost too simple. I’ve had bad experiences recording screens on Android or iOS and then converting them to GIFs. It often requires two different applications, and the results are rarely worth sharing.

Android Tools makes this really easy. All you need to do is install the app (and nothing else, no ADB, no drivers) and simply connect your Android/iOS device (or both). You should see that your device will be recognized (on Android you need to enable USB debugging from Developer Options). Now just click Videotapes and recording will begin.

Click it again and the recording will be encrypted and saved to Android Tools folder on your Desktop. Along with the video file, you’ll see a GIF file. The reason I have to make sure the app is working is because it doesn’t give any prompts – no Success dialog, no greetings, nothing.

But looking at the Android Tools folder tells me it works and works fine. On both Android and iOS.

From Interestyou can choose bit rate And Ratio. Depending on your purpose, change the settings as you like. Let’s say you want a small GIF image; just scale down.

When you’re recording on an iOS device, Android Tools cleverly cleans up the status bar. So you will have 9:41 as default time, unnecessary icons will be removed and more.

Take a screenshot: Click Camera button start recording video but if you want to take current screenshot of connected devices use shortcut Cmd+Shift+WORLD.

Install APK

Besides creating cool GIFs easily, this app has many other great features. Once you’ve connected to your Android device and need to install an APK file that may not be on the Play Store, all you need to do is double-click the APK file when you open the Android Tools app.

Run your own script

This one is for developers who know what they’re doing. But the app will let you run bash script on android phone using + button.
