Not so long ago, if you wanted to learn how to code, you had to major in computer science in college or at least buy a rather expensive book. Thanks to the App Store and the developers for making it grow, there are apps that offer extensive learning tools and are completely free so you can keep building the next big thing in software. .

Two of the top picks are Codecademy and Code School. Both of these iOS apps are free and offer quite different approaches to teaching code. Ultimately, it comes down to this question: which has a better approach and provides a more holistic education?
Codecademy is practiced, Code School teaches through video
The fundamental difference between Codecademy and Code School is each one’s approach to teaching code. Codecademy is extremely practical and has very little reading or viewing involved. Each step, the app walks you through as you go by coding a bit here and there starting from the very basics.
The Code School app, on the other hand, is largely just a collection of videos that you watch in chapters to build your code knowledge. There’s no coding in the app, just educational videos that are typically around 5 to 10 minutes long each. They’re well-made and fun enough to get your attention, but they do require you to take a moment to give it your all. Easier Codecademy for a quick lesson on the go.
Also, Codecademy and Code School divide coding into different sections. Code School calls these “paths” and they’re basically in the right place, so you don’t need to start learning about languages and types of code you’re not interested in. Code School has Ruby Path, JavaScript Path, HTML/CSS Path, iOS Path and others.
Parts of Codecademy are part of the so-called Programming Hour, which is the basis for the entire application. Code Hour promises to teach anyone what it takes to code in less than an hour.
Important: Code School’s roadmap allows for more coding, from learning to website design to iOS app programming. Codecademy is primarily focused on teaching JavaScript and HTML, so that’s something to consider.
Codecademy is faster and easier but less comprehensive
The main benefit of Codecademy over Code School is its ease of use. The learning technique is flexible enough that you can pick up your iPhone anywhere and pick up where you left off during your Code Hour session. Type in some lines of code, fill in some blanks here and there while learning along the way, then save the rest for later use.
Since Code School’s primary form of instruction is video, you’ll need headphones or a quiet place to listen and focus. This app is basically just a collection of videos and your task is to acquire the knowledge and work on it yourself as you watch or later.
Codecademy forces you to apply knowledge as you are learning. For example, if you’re learning about the H1 tag in Codecademy, chances are you’ve read a sentence or two about its function. Below that is a code example where you insert the H1 tag yourself and run the code to see your code in action immediately. Codecademy tells you if you’re right or wrong and how to fix the problem if you’re the first.
While Codecademy’s intuitive hands-on format gives it some points in this confrontation, Code School has solved the problem when it comes to diving into the small details. Typically, one of Code School’s 10-minute video “classes” will teach you more about code than 10 minutes of running through the steps and entering the code in Codecademy.
Once again, the Code School videos are brilliantly done. Even if you don’t get to practice, the lessons are dense enough to fill your mind.
Code School has more to teach you… for a price
Take the name very literally. Code School is basically a school, except the courses are only available through short videos. There are many of them and each one has a lot to offer you as a student.
Unfortunately for Codecademy’s Hour of Code, you should take the name literally as well. The app only has about an hour of content, and it’s nearly impossible to learn everything you need to know about coding in an hour – whether you’re designing a simple website or creating an app from scratch. .
Unfortunately Codecademy couldn’t have been a better fit for the application. It has a lot to offer and is an extraordinary resource for learning and applying code extremely quickly. But for most of what you should know, you have to use the desktop site at codecademy.com.
The Code Hour app covers data types, variables, comparisons, if-else statements, HTML, and web page design – but all very succinctly. If the entire Codecademy website – which has as thorough a resource as Code School – was available to your iPhone, the app would win this contest overwhelmingly.
You can stream (or save offline) all of Code School’s videos on your iPhone, which makes mobile learning a whole lot more comprehensive. However, unlike Codecademy, Code School has a fee: $29 per month. Some of the videos are free and teach you the basics, but others are for subscribers only. This subscription also unlocks the “challenge” and screen recordings on the Code School website, but they are also not accessible in the app.
In the end, both apps are disappointing in terms of what they offer in-app versus what the desktop requires, but Code School has a slight edge here.

It all depends on the mobile experience: which app teaches coding more efficiently and has more to offer right in the palm of your hand? The answer is the School Code. Codecademy’s hands-on approach is undeniably great and hard to beat the free price, but Code School’s videos are excellent and cover a wide range of coding topics and languages.
