Arthur Lithgow was born on September 9, 1915, in Puerto Plata Province, Dominican Republic, and passed away on March 24, 2004, in Amherst, Massachusetts, United States.

Lithgow studied at Harvard University and the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art before becoming known for his diverse work on the stage and screen
