Jim Ladd career
In 1969, Ladd started working at a small Long Beach rock station called KNAC. He left for the Los Angeles station KLOS after two years.
He moved to KMET in 1974, which was dubbed “The Mighty Met” by its devoted listeners. He stayed there for the majority of the following 13 years, returning to KLOS in 1984 but returning to KMET again two months before they changed their format. During this time, he also hosted and produced Innerview, an hour-long nationally syndicated interview program that aired at the same time.
On February 14, 1987, KMET management shocked southern California and all of radio by abruptly dumping rock music, the call letters, and the entire air staff.

This was after what many listeners and people in the industry perceived to be a long and steady decline in the station’s output, which was attributed by most accounts to the station’s decision to bring in consultant Lee Abrams and the strict “album-oriented rock” formatting he favored. KMET became KTWV (“The Wave”), featuring a new-age format with no DJs at all.
On Pink Floyd bassist Roger Waters’ second solo album, Radio K.A.O.S. (1987), Ladd made an appearance as DJ Jim, a fictional disk jockey who converses with Billy, the album’s subject, a disabled youngster.
Ladd toured with Waters afterward and made appearances in all three of the album’s music videos. Say Anything, directed by Cameron Crowe in 1989, had him as an all-night DJ as well. Major movie pictures like Tequila Sunrise, Rush, She’s Out of Control, and Defendor, starring Woody Harrelson, have also included Ladd’s artwork.
Ladd only did spot radio work for a number of years since he wouldn’t stick to a playlist, which was what the majority of station owners required.
When KMPC-FM abruptly abandoned its rock format two months later, Ladd was let go from his position there. Ladd had worked at KMPC-FM in the late 1980s, helping to define the station’s “Full Spectrum Rock” blend of classic and new rock. He was also excited about the station’s rebranding as KEDG “the Edge” in March 1989.
A semi-autobiographical book, Radio Waves: Life And Revolution On The FM Dial (St. Martin’s Press), was published in 1991 by Ladd. It chronicled his career in radio and the ups and downs of freeform rock radio in Los Angeles, from the beginnings of the genre on the West Coast to the dissolution of KMET in 1987.
In 1997, Ladd and his unstructured rock music made a comeback to KLOS, where it was broadcast Monday through Thursday from 10 PM to 2 AM (PDT) and on Sunday from 9 PM to midnight until October 26, 2011.
In Arbitron ratings, his program frequently topped its time slot. KLOS’s contract was extended in January 2007. He has also written, produced, and narrated a variety of nationally syndicated shows, including album debuts, concert specials, and interviews.
Most recently, Ladd has spoken with his listeners whom he refers to as “The Tribe” through his Facebook and MySpace profiles. He has utilized the site to promote free-form radio and get to know his listeners. He frequently accepts requests in the comments section.
Ladd was one of several employees of KLOS who were let go on October 26, 2011, after Cumulus Media acquired station owner Citadel Broadcasting.
Ladd hosted a three-hour farewell broadcast on Los Angeles AM station KFI on November 5, 2011. Beginning in January 2012, Jim Ladd will present a live, daily free-form music show on Deep Tracks, channel 27, according to an announcement made on December 2, 2011, by Sirius XM Radio.
