He was an advisor to Robert F Kennedy and served as mayor of Cincinnati from 1977-78, but after a failed bid to become governor of Ohio, he switched to a career in TV journalism.
He became famous for his program, The Jerry Springer Show which was launched in 1991 focusing on social issues and US politics, led by the then mild-mannered Springer.
But in an effort to boost ratings, Springer switched things up dramatically after a few years, focusing on salacious and outrageous content.
Springer called his program “escapist entertainment”, but others saw the show as contributing to a dumbing-down of television and a decline in social values.
The Jerry Springer Show ran from 1991 and ended its ran in 2018 after ratings declined. In the late 1990s, the show topped the daytime television ratings in the US, beating even Oprah.
From 2007 to 2008, Springer hosted America’s Got Talent, and in recent years he fronted the courtroom show Judge Jerry (from September 2019 until 2022).
In October 2022, Springer starred in the US version of The Masked Singer – one of his final TV appearances.
Sadly, the iconic talk show host has died. Jerry Springer passed away at his home in Chicago, Illinois on Thursday, April 27, 2023, at the age of 79.
The cause of his death has not yet been made public but according to a family spokesperson, Springer had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer a few months prior to his death.
