Instantly Switch a Chrome Tab to Incognito (Private) Mode

Private browsing has its uses – from a public computer to a computer in your home if you have multiple users sharing the same computer. It is becoming the norm rather than the exception that has led the browser giants to offer us this as a default feature.

You can reach the menu or even force Chrome, Firefox and Internet Explorer to start in private browsing mode. Then there is a third way, which is to use specialized extensions and add-ons to instantly switch the browser (in this case, Chrome tabs) to private mode. The word here is “immediate” and that is what I would recommend if you regularly use private browsing.

Incognito mode

Firefox has add-ons like Toggle Private Browsing, and Chrome has quite a few as well. Two Chrome extensions worth mentioning here can quickly switch Chrome tabs to Incognito mode.

Anonymous converter

Incognito Mode01

Anonymous converter (UPDATE: This tool is no longer available) is a convenient toggle to go into private incognito mode while you are browsing the web. You can switch from normal to incognito browsing by clicking the extension’s icon in the toolbar. Click it again and it switches back. If you click the icon twice, the current window will be switched. To speed up the conversion even more, you can use keyboard shortcuts. Enable the Allow incognito mode option in the extension’s settings; otherwise the tab will open in a new incognito window.

This anonymous!

Incognito Mode02

This anonymous (UPDATE: This tool is no longer available) is similar to the previous Chrome extension in that it instantly switches any open Chrome tabs to a new Incognito window and vice versa. You can switch the active page to a private browsing site (or a private page back to a regular tab) by clicking the extension’s toolbar button.

However, the extension’s settings give you some other customization options. Especially important is clearing the page history on the Switch, which Incognito Switcher cannot do. You can also set certain tabs to be opened incognito by default by specifying the words in their URL as keywords in the field provided below – Switch tabs with these keywords automatically in their URL to Anonymous.

It was these customization options that made me choose Incognito This over Incognito Switcher.

Are you an advocate of private browsing and keeping your data safe? Which is yours if and when you use Chrome’s incognito mode?
