How to Instantly Open a Safari Tab in Chrome

If you’re using a Mac, chances are you’re using Safari. It makes sense, it’s the default browser and it’s been getting really good lately. Tests have shown it to be as powerful as Chrome. And there’s a big reason to never use Chrome on a Mac — battery life. When you’re using Chrome, your Mac will die an hour or two earlier. At this point, that’s just a fact.

But one problem when using Safari is not loading Flash content. Macs don’t have Flash pre-installed. And while you could install it on your Mac, that would be a whole different matter.

So what a lot of people do is install Chrome (which comes with Flash pre-installed), just in case. When they come across a page that won’t load in Safari for some reason or because of Flash content, they simply open the page in Chrome.

Mac users have been doing this for a long time, often using Applescript and Automator actions. But now there is an easier way. As easy as installing an extension. Let’s go there.

How to install Open in Chrome Extension

The Open Chrome extension for Safari is basically just Applescript wrapped in an extension. It takes care of nuts and bolts for you.

Step 1: First, go to the project’s GitHub page, scroll down and click the . button Download button. This will download a zip file.

Step 2: Extract the zip folder. You will see several files. Install the extension by double clicking OpenInChrome.safariextz.

Step 3: To be able to open links in Chrome, you need to activate Chrome Helper app in the folder you downloaded. You can move this somewhere where you won’t accidentally delete it. Then double click it and click Open.

That’s it, you’ve installed the extension.

How to open Safari tabs in Chrome

Open button in Chrome

Now open Safari and in the top toolbar you will see a new right arrow icon. All you have to do is click on it and the tab will open in Chrome. It works perfectly as you can see in the GIF below.

What is your browser of choice?

Do you use Safari or Chrome on your Mac? I know Chrome has issues and I’m sacrificing about 2 hours of battery life, but I can’t switch to Safari. I’m so used to Chrome, and Chrome extensions are where the action comes in.
