With iOS 7, Apple has provided users with a completely new interface for this operating system, marking a complete difference compared to previous versions. However, other than upgrading to iOS7, iPhone users have no way to customize the system’s icons or UI elements.
This is where Winterboard comes into play. Winterboard is a customization tool available on jailbroken devices that allows iPhone users to apply ‘themes’ to completely customize every aspect of iOS including icons, UI elements , animation, etc.
Let’s dig a little deeper into how you can use Winterboard to completely customize iOS 7 to your liking.
Install Winterboard
The first step to customizing iOS is to get Winterboard. You can’t apply custom themes to your iPhone right from Cydia, so you’ll have to get Winterboard first, which is a dedicated tool for this task.
To do this, open Cydia and on the search field at the bottom of the screen look for Winterboard. Select it from the list of results and install it from its main screen (shown below). Once the installation is complete, tap the . icon restart button.
Once done, you will have a separate Winterboard icon on your home screen as shown in the following screenshot.
Find and get iPhone themes
If there’s one problem you’ll run into when searching for custom themes for your iPhone, it’s simply too much to choose from.
Themes are available through Cydia and there are so many that there should be a section dedicated to them.
To find a specific topic, I recommend looking for it on the web until you find a specific topic that you like. On the other hand, you can also browse through the multitude of ones currently available on Cydia until you find something interesting.
In my case I found a very nice app called ‘Circulus’, so I just searched for it on Cydia (like any other search) and installed it.
All the themes you find and install can then be found on Winterboard, which is where you’ll apply them.
Important Note: Before installing a theme, make sure it is compatible with your iOS version.
Apply the theme on your iPhone via Winterboard
When you have the theme you want, go to Winterboard and tap Choose a theme. There you will find all the themes you have downloaded via Cydia, you can rearrange these themes to your liking.
To apply a theme to your iPhone, simply tap the theme, return one screen in Winterboard, and then tap restart in the upper left corner of the screen. Your iPhone will reboot and you’ll have your new, shiny theme ready to enjoy.
And there you go. If you have a jailbroken iPhone and haven’t tried this feature before, you’re missing out on a great way to personalize your iPhone. So go ahead and try it out!
