I tested this theory with an alternate account again.

Using an alternate account, I followed and quickly unfollowed my main account.

The main account receives follow-up notifications in a snap.

Then the notification was removed as soon as I unfollowed it with the alternate account.

So the next time you unknowingly follow someone, unfollowing them right after will remove the follow message from them entirely.
