How To View Saved Wi-Fi Passwords On Chromebook

A few days ago, I went to a coffee shop and as always, I asked the bartender for the Wi-Fi password. But the reaction I got was something I never expected. Now, usually, I get my Wi-Fi password on the bill for prepaid orders I placed in my Chromebook to begin with. Hot coffee with some to-do articles, that’s a few hours away.

That day, the barista came to my table, asked me to look the other way (which annoyed me) while he entered the password. I was like, “what does he think I’m going to do with his Wi-Fi password? Selling it on eBay is possible. If he is so insecure, he should change it every day instead of asking the client to look in a different direction.”

Anyway, I finished my coffee quickly and before I left, I went up to the guy and gave him the bill and the Wi-Fi password that he very much owned. He’s surprised but I love the look on his face.

It’s quite difficult to find the Wi-Fi password of a connected network on a Chromebook, but as you can see, it can be useful sometimes. See how I did.

A Few Things To Make Clear

This trick will only work if your Chromebook has developer mode enabled. The good thing is, if it’s not in developer mode yet, we’ll show you how to do that. But enabling the feature will wipe your Chromebook, which means all your records, saved files, and even Wi-Fi passwords will be deleted.

So that means you’ll only be able to get the Wi-Fi password of the network you’re connected to after you put your Chromebook in developer mode.

Boot your Chromebook into Developer Mode

To get started, you’ll have to press the . button Exit, refresh And Power button on your Chromebook. When you press these buttons together, it will boot into recovery mode and you will get a message such as Chrome OS is missing and insert the recovery bar to restore. No worries here, Chrome OS is where it should be and you’ll have to press the button Ctrl+D button to enable developer mode.

Last chance! If you want to continue, press enter.

Find saved Wi-Fi passwords

Now that your Chromebook is in Developer mode, you can get the password of any Wi-Fi network you connect to. To get started, connect to the Wi-Fi network for which you want to crack the password, then tap Ctrl+Alt+T on the Chromebook keyboard. This will open the Crosh shell.

When you see the black shell screen, enter the following codes:

cross> shell

[email protected] / $ sudo su

localhost/# cd/home/root/

localhost root # ls

Here you will get directory listing with long string. Just type CD and a tab and hit enter. You will be taken to the directory. For example

localhost root # cd 6ac138e6f72d5b28ee8d9a344ada72f2f981818a/

localhost 6ac138e6f72d5b28ee8d9a344ada72f2f981818a #

Finally type the command “add shill/shill.profile” and press enter. You’ll see a line of text containing the Wi-Fi information of the networks you’ve connected to so far.

Find the Wi-Fi SSID for which you want to get the password and look for the line that says “Passphrase=rot47:”, followed by some random text. Well, this is the Wi-Fi password but it’s encrypted. To decode type echo | tr ‘!-~’ ‘P-~!-O’. Replace the desired code you received as the passphrase.

That’s it, you’ll have the Wi-Fi password on the screen.

Conclusion

I understand the process is a bit complicated, but you can bookmark this page or save commands to your favorite note-taking app. When needed, you can always refer back and even copy and paste the entire command. In case of any doubt, feel free to post your question in our forum.
