How to Use Your Own Shopping Personal Assistant on iPhone

Operator is a new iPhone app that acts as a personal shopping assistant. It also comes in time for the busy holiday season. If you have trouble deciding what or where to buy, the Operator can help you.

You just enter a few details about what you’re looking for — be it clothing, electronics, concert tickets… pretty much anything — and the Operator will connect you with a “specialist.” real, human, shopper who does the job of finding the perfect products for you online.

From there, you can browse your options and make purchases, which you can do directly from within the Operator. There’s something positive about the future of using this free app, and when you’re shopping for gifts, it quickly becomes your best friend. Plenty of apps already exist for thrift shopping, but less help with ideas.

Ask the operator to make your purchases

First thing first, tap Help me get started when you download the app to enter your phone number.

Note: Phone number must be a valid, US-based number.

Very soon, you will have to enter the confirmation code and viola, your account is all set up.

Note that Operator looks a lot like a standard messaging app. That’s because most of what you’ll do in the app is talk to an expert who will help you find what you’re looking for.

Before you begin, you should add your payment information. Since you can purchase products directly in the app, having the card on file makes the checkout process much faster. Touch Menu icon in the top left and then select Payment to add your credit or debit card information.

Tip: Press Shipping in progress Here too to quickly fill in the shipping address.

Finally, on the main Messages screen, tap Send require to begin. By default, the Operator will ask you several questions, starting with the product category you are looking for: clothing, home decor, flowers, electronics, tickets or others.

In my experience, I clicked on Something Else because I was looking for a birthday present for my dad. Then the app — still automated — wants to know what I’m looking for. After I specified, I was connected to a real person. The expert asked what my budget was and maybe some of my dad’s preferences. He’s a connoisseur, so I didn’t lie about it.

It took about 30 minutes to get a response after that, so it’s not the fastest process in the world, but I don’t have to sit there and wait either. The expert sent me two products: a pitcher from Bed Bath and Beyond and a beer cooler on Amazon. Those were pretty impressive gift ideas from someone who knew almost nothing about my father. All that is needed is a simple conversation through the Operator.

Products are shipped with a I will take it button. Click on it and you will be quickly taken to the payment page. It works and works great if you trust the product. Unfortunately, one big drawback of Operator right now is that it doesn’t provide links for more details — only product names, images, and prices.

However, Operator is a powerful new shopping experience that will likely only become even more powerful with time and updates. It’s a worthy and free shopping companion to try the next time you need a gift and need ideas or simply stick to a budget.
