Cross-platform syncing between multiple people is fast becoming a must-have add-on for WhatsApp and other similar services. You can now use your WhatsApp account on up to four devices without connecting your phone to the Internet. It was a welcome change and a relief for many.
With multi-device WhatsApp, you can use WhatsApp on your phone and up to four other devices. These other devices include WhatsApp Web, WhatsApp for Windows and Mac, and the Facebook portal. But unfortunately, you still cannot use the same WhatsApp account with the same mobile number on two mobile phones.

WhatsApp’s current multi-device functionality is still in beta, but you can opt in to the beta channel and try it out.
How to enable multi-device WhatsApp on phone
You need an Android phone to use this feature now. WhatsApp hasn’t enabled it for iOS users yet. If you have an Android phone, follow the steps below to enable WhatsApp multi-device.
Step 1: Open WhatsApp on your Android phone.
Step 2: Tap the three-dot menu at the top and select Linked Devices.
Step 3: WhatsApp will ask you to try new enhancements. Click OK.
Step 4: Tap on Multi-device beta and select Join BETA from the following menu. (In the future, you won’t have to follow this step once it becomes part of the stable build and public release.)
Step 5: Go back to the Linked Devices menu and you will see the status Joined for Multi-Device Beta functionality.
That’s it. You are now ready to enjoy multiple devices on WhatsApp. Let’s set it up.
How to set up multiple devices on WhatsApp
You have successfully registered to use multi-device functionality for WhatsApp. Follow the steps below to set it up with WhatsApp Web or Desktop.
Step 1: Download and install the WhatsApp app on Windows or Mac.
You can also access WhatsApp Web from any browser and set it up there. For example, in the screenshot below, we are using WhatsApp Web.
Step 2: WhatsApp will ask you to scan the QR code.
Step 3: Open WhatsApp on your Android phone and tap on the three-dot menu at the top.
Step 4: Select Linked Devices and touch Link Devices.
Step 5: Scan the QR code on the desktop using the built-in scanner from the phone.
Give it a few minutes. WhatsApp will take some time to sort through your end-to-end encrypted messages.
Now you can go ahead and turn off the Internet on your Android phone. WhatsApp desktop will continue to work as before, which was not possible before.
WhatsApp’s Multi-Device Restrictions
Multi-device functionality is still in beta. So some functions won’t work as expected. WhatsApp has listed currently unsupported features. Check out the list below.
- You cannot check the location directly on companion devices.
- Pin WhatsApp Web or Desktop chats.
- Join, view and reset group invitations from WhatsApp Web and Desktop. You’ll need to use your phone instead.
- Texting or calling someone using an older version of WhatsApp won’t work from your linked device.
- Call from Portal or WhatsApp Desktop to linked devices that are not registered in the multi-device beta.
- Other WhatsApp accounts on your Portal will not work unless those have joined the cross-device beta.
- WhatsApp Business users cannot edit their business names or labels from WhatsApp Web or Desktop.
If the features mentioned above are necessary for you, we recommend you to roll back to the stable version. To do that, you need to leave the WhatsApp multi-device beta program. Here’s how to do it.
Step 1: Open WhatsApp on your Android phone and go to the Linked Devices menu.
Step 2: Select Multi-device beta and tap the Leave beta button from the following menu.
WhatsApp will log you out of all connected devices and you need to reconnect to WhatsApp Web or desktop. This time, you’re using the old way of setting up a desktop WhatsApp connection, meaning you need to keep your phone connected to the internet for the perfect experience.
What about security and privacy
WhatsApp has completely revamped the underlying architecture of how messaging on the platform works so cross-device functionality works perfectly.
Here, each device has its own identification key. WhatsApp encrypts each individual message using the pairwise encryption session established with each device. Also, messages are not stored on the server after they are sent.

Using multiple WhatsApp devices
We connected the WhatsApp Android app to WhatsApp Web and then turned off the internet connection on the phone. Multi-device works perfectly between devices without any lag to sync new messages coming from the desktop to the connected phone.
However, you can only view messages up to three months in duration. If you try to look further, WhatsApp will ask you to use your mobile phone to see the full chat history.
Not being able to pin a chat can be frustrating for people who need to keep the most important topics at the top. WhatsApp also won’t sync starred stickers from phone to desktop.
Use WhatsApp on the web without a phone
