Gone are the days of simple apps, services, and operating systems. Now, everything is feature-rich and comes at the expense of simplicity. At the very least, Apple Music has a good enough user interface for you to care about. Did I mention that it also includes a 24/7 live radio along with stations based on artist and genre, plus a small social network for artists? I did not? OH.

Apple Music for Beginners: We wrote a beginner’s guide to Apple Music. While you’re at it, check out our in-depth Apple Music explanation.

Thankfully, once you figure it out, the app is super easy to use. Follow our instructions below.

Basic tips and tricks for using the new Apple Music app

Apple Music is crowded with a lot of stuff. That means things won’t be obvious at first glance. In addition to the 5 tabs at the bottom of the app, look for apple music And My music part. They’ll show up when you’re searching or when you’ve selected an artist.

Also, whenever visible, tap the three dotted menu buttons. This is where you’ll find all the important options for downloading music for offline use, adding songs to playlists, and more.

How to search for songs

You will find a magnifying glass icon in the upper right corner. Tap it and the search bar will show up. Below you will see two sections – apple music And My music. The red one is the selected one. Depending on where you want to search, select a specific option.

In the search bar you will see a clock icon, this will bring up your previous searches.

When you search in Apple Music, you’ll get sections for songs, artists, stations, and even playlists created by Apple’s music editor. These playlists are a great way to get started with a new artist.

How to use playlists

In Apple Music, there are two types of playlists. One is in My music, these are the playlists that you have created. They will be seen by going to My music and then from the top tab select playlists.

In Apple Music, you’ll also find playlists created by Apple’s music editor (Apple Music Playlist). There is no one place to find all these playlists in one place. But they will appear in For you section and in search results. When you come across such a playlist that you like, tap More icon. This will add the playlist to your music. This playlist will now show up in My music part. Yes, it sounds confusing but you will get used to it.

inside playlists section, you will see another option in the bottom half called All playlists next to that you will see a drop down menu. This is where you’ll find a hidden menu (there are a lot of hidden menus in Apple Music). This option will let you switch to only Apple Music Playlists, only your playlists, and only music available offline (useful when you’re traveling).

How to create your own playlist and add songs to it

You cannot create playlists from anywhere in the app. No, you need to navigate to playlists inner part My music and click New button. In the next screen, you can set a title, description, and even cover image for the playlist.

Now you can touch Finished or choose more songs will display a selector that includes your entire library. You can add the album or song you want. But you don’t have to do it all here.

One nice thing about Apple Music is being able to add songs/albums to playlists from almost anywhere. Whenever you see a three-dot menu, tap on it and in it you’ll see a Add to playlist select. Select your playlist and you’re done.

How to use Up Next to create playlists quickly

The new Music app includes a very useful app Next feature that I like to use in the iTunes app. It’s basically a queue of currently playing songs that you can control. If you don’t want to create playlists but want to set up 10-20 songs then this is the best way to do it.

Similar to the Playlist option, this option is also hidden in the three-dot menu button. Click on it and you will see two options – Next turn And Add to Next. Next turn will add the song to the top of the queue and Add to Next will add the song to the end of the list.

To access your Up Next queue, go to the currently playing track using the mini player and tap the . button List icon next to the searcher. From here you can reorder songs, clear the queue, and scrolling up will show your song history.

How to download Apple Music songs for offline use

One of the benefits of using Apple Music is that you can download any available song for offline use. Yes, that also includes Apple Music Playlists. But doing so is not obvious at first glance.

Let’s say I’m browsing For you and I came across a playlist called “About Arcade Fire”. Great, I’ve been meaning to check them out for a long time. I want to listen to it on my drive today. Better to download first.

After clicking, I can do two things, I can click More to add a playlist to my music (but that won’t download the songs). Or I can tap the three-dot menu button and press Offer offline.

Now, when I go to My music section, I can see that songs are being downloaded, also, the playlist is already in my library. Succinct!
