Apple updates default apps once a year with major OS updates. That’s also the case with the Notes app. With the update of macOS Monterey and iPadOS 15, the company has added Quick Notes function for users to take notes without opening the application. Here’s how to use quick notes on Mac, iPad, and even on iPhone.
Have you ever been in a situation where you wanted to quickly jot down a thought or cell phone number but didn’t have the right app for it? Of course, you can always open your favorite note-taking app and create a new note. But that’s not the problem here. You might miss that moment when you open an app to compose a note.
Apple Quick Notes can save you from such situations. With macOS Monterey and iPadOS 15, users can quickly take notes in the default Notes app without opening the app. This is the way.
Use Quick Notes on Mac
Quick Notes is only available for Mac computers running macOS Monterey or later. Here’s how to use it.
Step 1: You can hover the mouse pointer in the bottom right corner.
Step 2: You will see the Quick Notes pop-up.
Step 3: Tap that and macOS will open a small Notes window to take notes.
Step 4: Add a title, note and hit the close button at the top.
Taking quick notes on a Mac isn’t the ultimate solution. You can use all the text editing functions available in the main Notes application. One can edit the text with several text styles, create lists, tables and even add web links.
Whenever you open Quick Notes on your Mac, it opens the same note you created before. What if you want another quick note?
In that case, you need to open the Notes app on your Mac. You’ll see a Quick Notes section in the left sidebar. Right click on the note and move it to your iCloud account.
Quick Notes will now provide a clear note to write down notes. Plus, iCloud syncs all your Quick Notes across connected devices.
Use Quick Notes on iPhone
There is no direct way to use Quick Notes on iPhone. Apple added a Notes toggle in Control Center to let users create quick notes on the go.
By default, it is disabled. You need to enable it from the Settings menu. This is the way.
Step 1: Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
Step 2: Go to Control Center > More Controls.
Step 3: Tap the + icon next to Notes.
Step 4: It will be put into the Control Center menu.
You can now swipe up from the upper right corner and bring up the Control Center on iPhone. Tap the Notes toggle and it will take you to the note composing section. Create notes with rich text editing options and return to the home screen.
Added notes will not be stored in the Quick Notes section. This is the perfect example of Apple’s default apps that take advantage of OS-level integration. Apple doesn’t allow any other note-taking apps to add a toggle in Control Center.
Use Quick Notes on iPad
Quick Notes makes the most sense on iPad. iPad users with iPadOS 15 can use Apple Pencil to take quick notes on the go.
Step 1: Grab the Apple Pencil and hover over the bottom right corner.
Step 2: A quick note notification pop-up will appear.
Step 3: Clicking on that will open a quick note window to take notes.
Use your Apple Pencil and create handwritten notes on iPad. Open the Notes app on your iPad and access your Quick Notes from the left sidebar. You can move those notes to a folder in Apple Notes.
Take notes on the go
Apple has also included tag support in the Notes app on all hardware. So, for example, you can create a #quicknote tag and add it along with all your composed notes via Quick Notes. That way, you can easily identify and manage those notes with tags.
We expect to see a similar implementation on the iPhone for quick note creation. Control Center is fine, but something like the quick note-taking gesture from the bottom-right corner on an iPhone can be useful to users.
