Outlook.com is the new destination in town. Even if you’re married to Gmail, you should at least be interested in taking a little peek inside the new and free email service that’s more than just a rebranded Hotmail. It is a newly minted web-based email client. The new look is the first thing you’ll notice when you sign up and log in. We gave an overview of the service, talked about importing contacts and changing @hotmail to @outlook.com.
Those of you Gmail users who think Outlook.com email deserves fair use, instead of starting with an empty inbox, you can import your Gmail threads into Outlook.com
Connect Gmail and Outlook.com
To make these two arch-enemies play well together, we must first open the hood and go into Gmail settings to adjust the POP3 settings.
Step 1. Go to Gmail Settings. select Account forwarding navigation. Enable POP as shown in the screen below.
Step 2. Under POP Download, choose one of the following options (as shown above):
- Enable POP for all messages (including downloaded messages). If you select this option, all old and new email will be downloaded to your cloud-based account.
- Enable POP for incoming mail from now on. If you select this option, only new email will be downloaded to your cloud-based account (in this case, Outlook.com).
- You can also choose to keep a copy of your email in your Gmail account. Save settings and exit Gmail.
Step 3. Open Outlook.com. Click the Gear icon in the upper right to open More mail settings.
Step 4. Click Send/receive email from another account and then select Add Email Account.
Step 5. Enter your Gmail address and Google account password to connect Outlook.com and Gmail. Similarly, you can add up to five Gmail accounts.
Note: If you have a Google Apps account then you need to click High level options and enter your full email address ([email protected]) in the fields – Email address and POP3 username. The incoming mail server is pop.gmail.com and the default port is 995.
