Facebook, the most popular social network, is also a huge storehouse of personal data. There are messages, pictures, pictures and more uploaded by the user. And you can lose everything if your Facebook account is disabled (yes, that happened).
It’s good to have tools to backup your Facebook data. But most of them are not free. However, if you are a Firefox user, then you can easily backup and archive your past Facebook updates with the help of an add-on called ArchiveFacebook. It allows you to save photos, messages, activity streams, friend lists, notes, events and groups from your Facebook account locally on your computer.
You can access this data at any time in your browser.
Note: Facebook does not allow uploading of archived data using this addon. That means you can’t create a new Facebook account and upload all the data to create a copy of an existing account.
Here is how it works.
Install this add-on. Restart your browser. Now go to Tools->Addons. Click on ArchiveFacebook’s options button.
There are many options distributed in different tabs. go Organization navigation. Here you can choose where to save your Facebook data. You can store it in Firefox’s default profile folder or choose a separate location.
In the screenshot below, I have created a folder in drive F and named it “Facebook Backup” so that I can easily distinguish it from the other folders.
How to backup your Facebook account
1. Sign in to your Facebook account.
2. On the top Firefox menu bar, go to ArchiveFB->Archive. You can also start the process by pressing Ctrl+Shift+Y.
3. It automatically opens the Facebook page. A JavaScript dialog box will appear. Click OK.
4. The extension will now retrieve the activities one by one in reverse order. It shows the message on your desktop as shown as you can see in the screenshot below.
5. It automatically retrieves all data from the day you create your Facebook account. You can stop the process at any time.
After completing this procedure, the data download begins. Capture – The ArchiveFB dialog box appears showing the Facebook data download status.
This process is time consuming and depends on the number of updates and other factors. It may take several hours to download all the data.
How to browse Facebook data stored locally on your computer
This is how you can browse Facebook data locally. When you click on the ArchiveFB option at the top, you’ll see the Facebook icon along with your profile name. Click on it and it will redirect you to the locally stored data.
You can also choose the second option “Show in Sidebar”. Click on your account name to see all your Facebook data.
The opened page looks like your original Facebook page even though it is hosted locally and not on the internet.
file:///F:/Facebook%20Backup/data/20100430205914/index.html
Initial file:/// F: represents a file on your computer, stored inside the F drive. If you see an address something like http://www.facebook.com/profile/49685685034 then it’s not a local copy and you need to wait until the local copy is created.
