How to Use Android as Wireless Gamepad on 64-Bit Windows

Time and time again we have seen the tricks used by which one can use an Android device as a wireless controller for Windows. DroidMote is one of the apps we discussed before to control our games on Windows over Wi-Fi, using an Android phone. But the application cannot keep up with the time and crashes on Windows 8 64 bit. Also, this is no longer free software and users need to pay US$2.58 for the server application.

Today we are going to discuss a brand new app called Mobile Gamepad that you can install on the latest versions of Windows and use it to control your games wirelessly via Android.

This app has just appeared on the XDA portal and is still in the early stages of development. You may find the options are very limited, but the developer has promised some great features in future releases.

Mobile Gamepad for Android

Like any other wireless program, this one is based on the client-server module and both are free at the moment. While the client for Android devices can be downloaded from the Play Store, the server can be downloaded using this link. The server is an executable that is contained in a zip archive and you will need administrative rights on the computer to perform the installation.

The drivers are signed for the 64-bit version of Windows and no further work is required.

Listen to the gate

After you install the server, run it. As soon as you start the server it will show you an IP whose port it is listening on. Open the Android app and enter the address to connect the devices together manually. If you get an error of any kind, make sure both devices are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. If you don’t have any routers to connect to, you can create a virtual network from your computer and connect using it.

IP address

Once the devices are connected, you will see a very basic gamepad on the screen with an explanation of the function of every control. However, before you can start playing the game, you will have to map each key on the keyboard used to play with the controller buttons in the Game Cards. Just press Add button and configure key mapping. You must also provide the path of the executable used to launch the game.

Edit the game

Once all the configurations are done, tap the game select button on the app and select the game you want to launch. The desired game will automatically launch on your PC and you can sit back and play it wirelessly. Don’t forget to turn on motion control for more fun.

Conclusion

So that’s another way you can use to control your games on Windows over the air using your Android phone. As I mentioned, the app is in the early stages of development and you may miss some keys like L1 and L2. But for now let’s wait for the updates.

However, you can still enjoy some great racing games like NFS that require minimal button configuration. So give the app a try and let us know if you like it. You can also give valuable feedback on what you might like to see in future updates.
