How to Unsend an Email on Your iPhone

If you use email a lot, chances are high that you might have come across a situation where you want to unsubscribe from email. You may have sent an email to the wrong recipient, forgot to attach an attachment, or an email with a certain typo. Fortunately, some email clients allow you to revoke or cancel email delivery – of course, there is a time limit involved in doing so.

Most email clients have mobile apps that make it easy for users to send and receive emails on their devices. If you use an iPhone, here’s how you can unsend emails on the Apple Mail, Gmail, and Outlook apps.

How to cancel sending emails in Apple Mail for iPhone

When you bought an iPhone, the Apple Mail app came pre-installed. With the Apple Mail app, you can sign in to different email accounts, including Gmail and Outlook. However, to cancel sending emails using the Apple Mail app, you must ensure that your iPhone is running at least iOS 16. If your device is running iOS 16 or later, you can cancel sending emails using Apple Mail.

Step 1: On your iPhone’s home screen, tap the Apple Mail app.

Step 2: Tap the email account you want to send emails from.

Step 3: At the bottom right of the screen, tap Compose icon.

Step 4: Enter the details of your email including the recipient, subject and body of the email.

Step 5: Tap the blue up arrow in the upper right corner to send the email.

After tapping the send button, at the bottom of your Inbox, you’ll see a blue Undo Send message. Note that this Undo Submit button will only appear for 10 seconds.

Step 6: Tap Undo sending message and this will prevent the email from being sent.

Step 7: Make any changes you want to the email, then tap the blue upward arrow at the top right of the screen to resend the email.

If the Undo Send button is not used within 10 seconds, you can no longer unsend your email. If you want more time to use the Undo Send feature, you need to update your iPhone Settings.

On Gmail, users can increase the length of time the Undo Send feature is available. Available time intervals are 5, 10, 20 and 30 seconds. However, increasing the interval is only available on the desktop app, not the iPhone app.

Cancel Sending Emails in Outlook for iPhone

The option to unsend email in Outlook is not yet available for the mobile apps. However, users can use Outlook for desktop or Outlook for the web to unsend or recall emails.

Cancel sending email with time limit

Although the iPhone supports many email clients, only a few of them offer the ability to unsend emails. Depending on that, you can set a delay time and save yourself any embarrassment or mistakes. If you are unsure about the content, you can always schedule the email to be sent to a later date. The Gmail, Outlook, and Apple Mail apps let you schedule emails on your iPhone easily.
