While the main Elden Ring map lets you use any Spiritspring you see freely, many in Shadow of the Erdtree require you to unlock them first, but like most things in a FromSoftware souls games – it’s not entirely obvious.

How to unseal Spiritsprings

To unseal a Spiritspring you just need to find the corresponding stack of rocks nearby and attack them.

The rocks are always close by, marked with a little circle of stones. They’re also usually tucked around a corner or on a different elevation level to the Spiritspring itself with enemies around them.

If you can’t be bothered to track the rocks down, you can actually use Mohg or Margit’s Shackle from the base game on the ghostly image of the rocks in the sealed Spritspring instead.

After toppling the rocks, you’ll be met with the message, “somewhere, a Spiritspring has been unsealed” and you’ll hear a rush of air coming from its location. The column of wind rises quite high into the sky, so they shouldn’t be too hard to see.

While you can figure out this process when you come across your first sealed Spiritspring anyway, the solution is actually found in a note that can be purchased from Moore, an NPC at the Main Gate Cross Site of Grace. But if you’re reading this guide, just save the 1000 Runes.

Once you activate a Spiritspring it will be useable for the rest of the game, so you don’t need to worry about repeating the process.

There only seems to be a handful of these across the Shadow of the Erdtree map, with the rest of them working as normal.
