Concord Freegunner Variants and Combat Traits explained

If you’ve been playing Concord for a little while, you might have noticed a couple of different variants of the same Freegunners appear in your roster.

These Freegunner Variants are different versions of the same hero and can provide slightly different gameplay bonuses depending on which one you pick.

While there are 16 characters to choose from in the original roster of characters in Concord, each of those characters has their own line of Variants. These versions will look slightly different and also come with their unique Combat Traits.

You can distinguish Variants by looking at their profile card. For example, I currently own two versions of Lennox – one has the Roman numeral I, and the other Variant has the numeral II.

From what I can tell, each hero Variant shares the same progression level. This means if you earn XP while playing as Lennox I, your Lennox II will share the same progression.

Combat Traits explained

Combat Traits in Concord are essentially additional passive abilities that each hero possesses, and each Freegunner Variant will have its own Combat Trait.

For example, the original version of Lennox has the ‘Reload equipped weapon during dodge’ Combat Trait. Meanwhile, Lennox II has ‘Extra ammo for both weapons’.

The Combat Trait system means you can experiment with different versions of the same Freegunner to find the right version that fits your playstyle. I prefer to use Lennox II, as I don’t find myself using the dodge button often enough to feel the benefit of Lennox I’s Combat Trait.

How to unlock more Freegunner Variants

To unlock new Freegunner Variants, you’ll need to complete the challenges in the ‘Freegunners’ tab of the Job Board menu.

I currently have one set for Teo, which asks me to do 8,000 ability damage. Completing this will unlock me Teo II, who has the ‘Extended Magazines and additional grenades’ Combat Trait.

It seems that if you want to unlock a new Variant of a specific Freegunner, you’ll likely need to use the original character a tonne before unlocking a new version of them. Keep checking the Freegunners tab on the Job Board for new information, as these will likely cycle as days go by.
