So to help you with that, here are all the ways you can enable or disable subtitles on YouTube.
While captions, also known as Closed Captions (CCs), are a great accessibility tool, they can also become a hindrance at times. To help you manage them, we’ve looked at how to turn captions on or off on the web and the YouTube mobile app.
How to enable YouTube subtitles in web browser
Turning on YouTube subtitles while using any web browser is as simple as clicking the CC icon. However, it may not guarantee that it will enable subtitles for all videos. To make sure that happens, you can also go into playback settings and enable subtitles from there.
Let’s see step by step how to enable YouTube subtitles in web browser using both methods.
Method 1: Turn on subtitles for a video
Step 1: Open YouTube on any web browser.
Step 2: Click on the video for which you want to enable subtitles.
Step 3: Here, click on the CC icon.
This will enable subtitles for the selected video. Now, if there are additional language subtitles, you can also select and change the language of the subtitles. This is the way.
Step 4: Tap the gear icon to open Settings.
Step 5: Here, click on Subtitles/CC. This will open a list of all available subtitles for the current video.
Step 6: You can click on one of the available languages or use the automatic translation option to automatically translate the subtitles from the available language to the unavailable language.

Now, if you want to turn off the subtitles, click the CC icon again. When the red line disappears below it, the subtitles will also be disabled.
Method 2: Enable subtitles for all videos
Step 1: Open YouTube on your web browser.
Step 2: Then, click on your profile icon.

Step 4: Here, go to the Playback and performance tab.
Step 5: Check the ‘Always show captions’ box. This will make sure YouTube shows subtitles for the video if available.

Method 1: Enable Subtitles from Video Player
Step 1: Open the YouTube mobile app.
Step 2: Then, tap on the relevant video.

This will enable subtitles for the video. Follow the steps below if you want to change the subtitle language.

How to change the default settings for subtitles on YouTube
Besides turning subtitles on or off, you can change the default settings for subtitles on YouTube. This will allow you to change the subtitle color, background color, font size, etc. It is useful if you want to customize the look of your subtitles or make them easier to read. Here’s how to do it:
Using a web browser
