Have you recently switched from a Pixel or Android phone to an iPhone? You must be wondering how to upload your photos from Google Photos to iCloud? It doesn’t take rocket science to do it, but the process can be time-consuming. In this post, we will tell you how to transfer images to iCloud from Google Photos and whether you should do it or not.
In case you are happy with Google Photos and the only reason to switch to iCloud is that you are switching to iPhone, then my friend, there is no need to transfer them. You can also use Google Photos on iPhone the same way you did on Android. All your photos will be on your iPhone, and new ones will also be added to Google Photos.
However, if you have other reasons to switch to iCloud, you can do it on iPhone and PC, as illustrated below. Before starting the steps, let’s understand a little bit about iCloud Photos and Google Photos.
What are iCloud Photos and Google Photos?
Google Photos is available for both Android and iPhone. This is a gallery app that also allows you to backup your photos and videos to the cloud. iCloud is an Apple service that, similar to Google Drive, stores your data in the cloud. Part of this service is allowing you to back up your images. iCloud does that through the Photos app on your iPhone.

Transfer photos from Google Photos to iCloud on Windows
To do that, you’ll have to download your data from Google Photos, then re-upload it to iCloud. Below are the detailed steps for each section.
Download Photos from Google Photos
Step 1: Open photos.google.com on your browser and sign in with the Google account associated with Google Photos.
Step 2: Hover the mouse on the first image you want to select and then click on the tick icon to select. It will turn blue. Repeat this step for all the photos you want to select.

Step 3: Once selected, click on the three-dot icon at the top and select Download from the menu.

Step 4: A ZIP file will start downloading with all the photos you selected. Now you need to extract it in your preferred location. For that, right click on the file and select Extract from the menu. Alternatively, you can use an online tool to decompress it or see a method to automatically decompress ZIP files after downloading.

Upload photos to iCloud Photos
Step 1: Open icloud.com on your PC’s web browser and go to Photos.
Step 2: Click on the cloud icon at the top to start uploading a new photo.
Step 3: A window will open. Navigate to the extracted folder containing the images you downloaded from Google Photos. Select the photos you want to add to iCloud. Then wait for them to upload.

Transfer photos from Google Photos to iCloud on iPhone
Here, you’ll need to download the Google Photos app if you don’t have it on your iPhone. You will then have to download the photo from there. But you don’t have to manually re-upload them as your iPhone will do it automatically.
Step 1: Open the Google Photos app on your iPhone. If an app asks you to enable backups, don’t give it access. Otherwise, photos available on your iPhone will sync with Google Photos.
Step 2: Go to the Albums section of Google Photos and you will find all your photos there. Tap and hold the photo to select. Then, without lifting your finger, drag it over the other photos you want to select.
Step 3: Tap the share icon at the top and select Save Image. The images will be downloaded to your Camera Roll.
Step 4: Open the pre-installed Photos app on your iPhone. You will find images downloaded from Google Photos. Now to make them available on all your synced devices, you will have to enable iCloud Photo Library.
To do that, open the Settings app on your iPhone and go to Photos. Then toggle the switch for iCloud Photos. In case it is already on, leave it as is.
You will get two options — Optimize iPhone Storage and Download and Keep Originals. Use the first one if you want to keep lower resolution photos on your iPhone while keeping the original photos in iCloud. You should use it if your iPhone is running low on storage space. Go with the second option if you have enough storage on your iPhone.

Transfer photos from Google Photos to iCloud on Android
Can’t do it directly on Android. However, you can use the same steps mentioned for Windows to do it on Android. That is, open the iCloud website on your Android phone’s browser. Then upload the photo there.
Things need to notice
When you are doing this task, you should take care of these things.
Patient
If you have a lot of images in Google Photos, the whole process can take time, depending on internet speed. So stay calm and have patience.
Enough capacity
Before you start transferring your data from Google Photos to iCloud, check your available iCloud space. The available memory should be enough to upload all data from Google Photos. To check the space, go to the Settings app on your iPhone and tap your name at the top. Then tap iCloud.

Batch execution
To be on the safe side, you shouldn’t transfer all the data in one go. Do it in batches of 100-200 images.
Data on Google Photos
After moving photos to iCloud library, photos will remain in Google Photos because we haven’t deleted them.
