With Evernote discontinuing Skitch on all platforms except Mac, you might be worried that a Mac version will come next. We have several alternatives to the screenshot tools located in the menu bar.
Why is Skitch so great?
Taking a screenshot on a Mac is simple with a few special keyboard shortcuts. Skitch has those shortcuts too. That is nothing new. After you take a screenshot in Skitch, it allows you to annotate and modify the screenshot. Then Skitch makes all those images easy to find. Finally, it allows you to share them. All these functions make Skitch invaluable, but you can still do all this from the menu bar using a few special programs.
Missing Skitch on other platforms? We have several other options
Sharpshooter: Control the option to save screenshots
By default, Apple saves your screenshot on the desktop with a common name. An easy terminal command that allows you to change the default location. Sharpshooter’s preferences allow you to change the default name, location, and type of screenshot taken.
Cool feature is Present it in Sharpshooter. That allows you to change the defaults every time you take a screenshot. Move to Trash reduces clutter from unused screenshots. Because Skitch saves screenshots in the program, it’s more difficult to control names and types.

Monosnap (Free): Edit and annotate screenshots
Monosnap is the closest thing I’ve found to replicating Skitch’s editing and annotation functions. Like Skitch, Monosnap allows you to take screenshots from the menu bar. Along with timed and full-screen capture, Monosnap also lets you record video.
Once you’re in Monosnap, you can save images locally to your hard drive or upload them to Monosnap’s servers. If you want them on your server, Monosnap includes FTP, SFTP, WebDav, and Amazon S3 for free. If you want more Dropbox or Box storage, it’s a $4.99 in-app purchase.
Unlike Skitch, Monosnap allows you to open existing photos without importing them. You don’t need to export them after modifying, just click Save. If you want to share them publicly, click the link icon and it will copy a public URL to the clipboard.
Screenie ($9.99): Organize and find your screenshots
After you have a good collection of screenshots, finding a specific one can be a pain. Skitch gives you a great browser to find everything it hosts. Finder’s Cover Flow and Spotlight help, but you must disable your current program to use it. The Screenie menu bar option allows you to stay on your current program.
Screenie is on the menu bar and shows you a preview of all the screenshots in a folder. What I like about Screenie is that it also allows you to include other folders. That’s a feature that Skitch doesn’t offer. Like Sharpshooter, Screenie allows you to change the default location and file type of screenshots.
Need Screenshots on Apple TV: Here’s How
Most of the time you take a screenshot so you can use it in another program. Screenie, after a special shortcut, copies your last screenshot to the clipboard. All you need to do is paste the word. If you need to insert another screenshot, the Screenie browser allows you to drag and drop it directly from there. That’s a feature that Skitch doesn’t offer.
Skitch allows you to create a public link, through Evernote, to anything it hosts. Those public links help avoid having to email the same file to multiple people. After you share a photo from Skitch, it copies the link to your clipboard. You cannot do sharing from the Skitch menu bar icon, you need to go into the program to share.
Upspace does the sharing through the Dropbox Applications folder. After you drag the screenshot (or any photo) to the Upspace icon in the menu bar, it creates a URL and copies that URL to the clipboard. URLs in Skitch are long and complex. The last time I created a public URL in Sketch, it was over 50 characters. The Upspace URL has 15 characters.

From the menu bar, Upspace gives you a preview of the photo and how many times it was viewed. When you want to delete a photo, right-click it from the Upspace icon. If you want to send the link via email, Messages or Facebook, the share icon will let you do that. Skitch allows you to share images with a step to other programs. The public URL function only allows you to copy. That’s another plus for Upspace.
Combine All and Quit Skitch?
Skitch is free, so if cost is your top priority, stick with Skitch. All four of these programs work together to give you options that Skitch doesn’t include. Since most are free or low cost, you can have it all too.
