Microsoft Windows 10 has been out since July 2015 but there’s still a long way to go for the Photos app to function properly. While the Photos app looks crisp at first, it has a clunky user interface, confusing menus and controls. Don’t forget the ridiculously frequent incidents that can get you worried very quickly. And then there’s the problem with the background color.
Depending on Windows 10’s system color mode, the Photos app may have a black or white theme. However, colors are displayed evenly in the application and can cause great challenges when viewing certain images because the surrounding colors are too strong.

Microsoft could have alleviated this problem by using a lighter blue color as in the older Windows Photo Viewer. But all you can do now is manually change the background color depending on the image you want to see. Or maybe it’s just a matter of aesthetics – your choice.
Change background color directly
By default, the Photos app displays the color mode (Light or Dark) specified by the operating system. But instead of changing the system colors (which we’ll look at further below) and impacting other native Windows 10 apps in the process, the Photos app includes built-in toggles you can can be used to quickly switch between both modes.
Step 1: Launch the Photos app, then click the horizontal ellipsis (three dots) icon in the upper-right corner of the window. On the drop-down menu, click Settings.
Step 2: On the Settings screen, scroll down to the section labeled Mode. By default the color mode is set to Use System Settings and that’s why the app chooses the system color scheme.
Override it by clicking Light to switch to a white theme and background, or Dark to choose a completely opposite (black) theme.
To apply changes, you need to exit the Photos app. Just close the window to continue.
Step 3: Relaunch the Photos app and you should see the change in theme and background color reflected immediately.
And you guessed it right — you need to go through the same process whenever you want to change the background color. A simple switch on the UI itself would work great, and here’s hoping that Microsoft will do that or something like that in the future.
Change system color mode
If you want a consistent experience with other native Windows 10 apps that support color mode, such as Mail, Windows Store, Windows Settings, etc., consider changing the system color scheme to achieve the best results. similar results. Despite its flaws, the Photos app offers many useful tools that you can use to edit and spice up your images. However, the Edit & Create mode you need to switch to has a completely dark background. And sadly, that won’t change regardless of whether you make any modifications to the Photos app or system color settings.
And that’s pretty absurd. Especially when editing transparent images that only include blacks because you can’t see anything in the first place. In the meantime, consider using alternative image editors for those cases where the Photos app is causing you grief.
