Recently, have you encountered the ‘Proxy server is refusing to connect’ error on your Firefox browser? This error is mostly seen on Mozilla’s Firefox browser or sometimes on the TOR browser that provides anonymity.
There can be many reasons why the website you are trying to access won’t open without trouble. It could be adware or malware, a bug in your LAN settings, or the Firefox proxy settings themselves. It’s also possible that the site/website is down and in that case I can’t help you.
Let’s take a look at some solutions and methods that will help you fix the proxy server connection error.
1. LAN proxy settings
To check LAN proxy settings on Windows 10, press the Windows button on your keyboard and type Configure Proxy Server before pressing the Enter key. That will open a popup for Internet Properties.
In the Connections section, click LAN Settings to check if your system is using any proxy settings under the Proxy Server heading. If so, you’ll see an IP address. Uncheck the option and save everything.
Restart your computer and launch Firefox to check if the web page loads correctly.
2. Firefox proxy settings
If the LAN settings are set to required parameters, check if your browser’s proxy settings have been changed. Press the ALT key to see additional browser options, click Tools and select Options.
Click Advanced in the left sidebar. In the Network tab on the right, click Settings next to Configure how Firefox connects to the Internet.
That’s where you can manage your proxy settings. It should be set to No proxy by default. On some browsers it can also be set to Use system proxy settings. This setting should work fine if your LAN proxy settings are set correctly in Step 1 above. To be on the safe side, set it to No proxy.
Click OK. Restart Firefox to check if you still get the proxy server error.
3. The proxy file in the Registry
You can sometimes track the ‘Proxy server is refusing to connect’ error for leftover proxy files in the Windows Registry. To edit the registry, press the Windows key and type regedit before pressing enter. This will open file explorer.
You will have to navigate to the following directory. Check directory path:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings
If you see any file with the word proxy in its name, delete it. I recommend backing up first in case things go awry. No system reboot is required for this step and you can restart Firefox.
4. Reset network settings
This one is worth a try although it’s not exactly a Firefox-specific solution. If the website you’re trying to load doesn’t work on any other browsers like Chrome and Safari, you should try resetting the network settings.
If the site loads fine on Chrome but doesn’t load on Firefox or Quantum, you can skip this step.
To reset network settings, open a run command prompt and run the following commands one by one.
netsh int reset allnetsh int ip resetnetsh winock resetnetsh winhttp reset proxy
These commands will reset your network proxy settings to their default values.
5. Fix hacked router
Consider yourself lucky if Firefox works fine after following the steps above until you restart your computer. If that’s the case for you, then there’s a chance that unwanted software or malware is misbehaving. It is forcing a setting change on reboot.
A simple way to test this theory is to restart your PC, launch Firefox browser, and test any changes in proxy settings to discover if it still shows No proxy. In case the settings are different, then it is likely that a piece of software or rogue code is forcing it on your computer. Do not worry. There is an easy way to find out if your computer is infected with a virus.
Import MiniToolBox from Bleeping Computer. Download this small but useful software and run it. No need to install it.
Click Select All to find proxy errors on all installed browsers, including Firefox. The software will take some time to diagnose and generate a Notepad file with a detailed report of its findings. You can choose to save the generated report.
In the report, you will know if the proxy settings are enabled and if so, what software is causing the error.
6. Adware Problem
There are two types of ads. Things are intrusive and we don’t like to watch them because it degrades our user experience while surfing the web. The others seemed fine and helped us discover new, interesting things.
Adware falls under the third category. Their goal is to download ads and banners, and sometimes lines of bad code, into your browser or system and wreak havoc. Perhaps, you hit one of them.
The trusted team behind Malwarebytes developed AdwCleaner. So download, install and run it to check if your computer is infected with virus or not. If so, AdwCleaner will suggest remedies and steps to take. For the most part, it will handle the situation on its own. AdwCleaner is free to download and use and is ad-free.
7. Breakthrough Technology
Another common problem can be malware. These are pieces of software designed to circumvent and gain access to your computer — be it a virus, trojan, or spyware. Again, we would look no further than Malwarebytes to solve the problem.
The free version of Malwarebytes is good enough and can fix proxy server connection errors in no time. Malwarebytes is free to download. Install and run it to check if there are malicious plugins, viruses or trojans lurking in your computer.
Don’t take No for an answer
If your browser says no when you visit a website and throws an error, don’t just sit there cursing it. Switching browsers every time you get this error is not a solution. Solve the problem yourself and try one of the solutions above to find a solution to the proxy server connection error.
As noted above, there can be many factors involved like network settings, browser settings, adware, malware, trojans etc. Take it step by step until you can find it. find the right solution to fix the error.
