LogMeIn Hamachi is probably the most popular and preferred desktop VPN (Virtual Private Network) client for the Windows platform. Gamers believe in it religiously. Although easy to use, the launch of Windows 10 has complicated things. Many users complain about how Hamachi doesn’t work on their computers.
The problem is twofold. If Hamachi is not working on your Windows PC, continue reading this guide.
Let’s get started.
1. Restart
Some users say that restarting their system after solving the problem. Well, it’s worth a try and only takes a few minutes. Try it.
2. Run as Administrator
Hamachi requires administrator privileges to set up a VPN on your computer. Maybe that’s what’s missing while you try to run it. Right click on Hamachi and select Run as administrator.
If that solves the problem, right-click again and select Properties this time.
Select Run this program as administrator in the Compatibility tab and press Apply and OK.
That will force Hamachi to launch and run with administrator privileges by default.
3. Firewall and Antivirus
Hamachi creates a VPN that you can use to grant remote access to your computer. A powerful application, can firewall and anti-virus software are blocking Hamachi, for your own benefit. Launch Firewall and in the Actions tab select Properties.
Now in the Domain Configuration tab you will select Custom next to Protected Network Connections.
Uncheck Hamachi from this list and leave the rest as is. Save everything and switch to your anti-virus software. See if it blocks Hamachi.
4. Another VPN Client
Are you using another VPN client on your computer? If so, it could be the two of them vying for world domination or just your computer. Even if you have a factory default VPN client, such as a Dell computer bundle, you’ll have to uninstall it. Try Hamachi again after you restart your PC.

5. Hamachi . Driver Update
Search for Device Manager in Windows search and open it. You will find the LogMeIn Hamachi Virtual Ethernet Adapter entry. Right click on it to select Update driver here.
Follow the onscreen instructions to update the drivers on your computer if they are out of date.
6. Microsoft Network Adapter Multiplexing Protocol Error
Some users have reported that the Microsoft Network Adapter Multiplexing Protocol is the cause of all the problems with Hamachi on their PC. It is an easy fix though. Open Control Panel and click View network status and tasks under Network and Internet.
Click Change adapter settings.
Double-click on Hamachi to open LAN settings. Check that Microsoft Network Adapter Multiplexing Protocol is unchecked.
Make sure your adapter is still named Hamachi instead of something like Ethernet 4. Sometimes this name is changed to default and that’s why you keep getting the same error.
7. Install as legacy hardware
If the above solution does not work, we will have to reinstall Hamachi. However, this time you will have to install it as legacy hardware. To do so, go back to Device Manager and this time click on Uninstall device.
In the same screen, select Add legacy hardware in the Actions tab.
Click Next here.
Select Hardware Settings that I manually selected from the list option (Advanced) and click Next.
Select Show all devices here and click Next.
Click Have Disk.
Now just browse to the folder where you installed Hamachi and select the driver file (.inf) from the folder. That will install Hamachi as Legacy Hardware.
8. Golden Triangle problem
It’s called that because when your friends try to connect to your server, you’ll see a yellow triangle right next to their name and they can’t join the network. When you hover over the triangle, does it show ‘Live Tunnel’? Some users have reported that the LogMeIn Hamachi Tunneling Tool Service, which should have been enabled, was disabled on their computers for some reason. That can cause the above error.
To test, press Ctrl + R to open the Run prompt and type service.msc before pressing Enter.
Right click on LogMeIn Hamachi Tunneling Engine Service and if the service is not running, click Start. If it’s running, the Start option is grayed out, click Restart and wait a while before checking if Hamachi works on Windows 10.
Now right click again and select Properties this time. Under the General tab, make sure the Startup Type is set to Automatic so you don’t have to come back here every time you restart your PC.
9. Network Adapter Priority
If you have multiple network adapters on your computer, each network adapter will receive a priority index. This metric is used by Windows to connect to the Internet. The Hamachi support team recommends that Hamachi be given a higher number than 9000.
Press the Windows + I keyboard shortcut to launch Settings and select Network & Internet.
In the Status tab, scroll a bit to find Change adapter options and click it.
Right click on the Hamachi adapter and select Properties.
You are looking for TCP/IPv4. Select it and click Properties.
Click Advanced.
In the IP Settings tab, uncheck Automatic Metric and enter 9000 manually. Click OK and save everything. Relaunch Hamachi and reconnect.
Note that a lower number here means a higher priority and that’s why we give Hamachi a higher number so Windows won’t use it to connect to the Internet.
10. Electric Cycle
When you turn off the computer or log off, it affects the power cycle of the computer. The power cycle will then affect all services that depend on it to run, including Hamachi. To make sure this doesn’t happen, open Notepad with administrator privileges and copy and paste the commands below:
stop network Hamachi2Svcnet start Hamachi2Svcstart “X:\Filepath\LogMeIn Hamachi\hamachi-2-ui.exe”quit
Note: The X above represents the Hard Drive partition letter.
Don’t change the order. Replace Filepath with the path to where you installed Hamachi. Now save the file as HamachiStart.cmd in the folder structure below. When you’re saving the file, select Save As as All Files.
C:\Windows\System32
Press Windows key + R to open Run prompt and type the command below before pressing Enter. That will open the Task Scheduler.
taskschd.msc
Click Create Task.
You can name this task anything, but to make it easier to remember, name it HamachiStart. Select ‘Run only when user is logged in’ and below that, Windows 10 in the Configure options. Click OK.
Select the Activation tab and click New.
That’s where we will decide when the task should run so it doesn’t directly affect the power cycle. Select At start-up from the drop-down menu next to Start Task and select Enabled under Advanced Settings. Click OK.
Now go to Actions tab and click New here.
Select Start Program in the Actions drop-down menu and browse to the System32 folder where you saved the HamachiStart.cmd file. Click OK.
Finally, go to the Conditions tab and uncheck all the options you see there.
Click OK and save everything before you close any windows. Restart. The next time you log out, Hamachi-related services will be unaffected and continue to run.
Game on
That’s summed up all the possible ways I could find to solve the Hamachi not working error on Windows 10. If the problem is with Hamachi instead of Windows 10, I’ve written a separate guide, linked to which you will find in the opening paragraph above. If you know of any other ways to solve this, let us know in the comments section below.
