How to Share GIFs on Facebook, Twitter or Your Blog

When it comes to sharing media online, photos and videos are the only two that come to mind. Although Photos are evergreen, videos are more emotional as you can see all the moments. However, we don’t always feel comfortable with videos and it’s mainly because of the large file sizes and believe it or not, it’s also because of the background sound that accompanies these videos.

Then there are GIFs that bring the best of both worlds. They are quite small in size and are therefore ideal for sharing online, and at the same time, they are moving images and look less like a video with less detail. Now, as I mentioned, they are a series of images that move so fast that they look like a moving movie, and now, the internet is flooded with those images. There are many websites that host public GIFs that you can use and share online. We have also shared quite a few ways on how you can create GIF files from photos and videos, and you can check out previous articles for some more.

However, this article is intended to teach you how to use these GIFs on a social network like Facebook, Twitter or a personal blog. To get started, you’ll have to find a GIF that you want to share on Giphy or Imgur, the largest database of GIFs online. Explore them before you get started, and if you’ve created a personal GIF that you’d like to share, I recommend uploading the GIF files to one of the two services mentioned to make things easier.

How to share GIFs on Facebook

Now to share a GIF on Facebook it is extremely important to upload it online first and Imgur or Giphy are the two best sources to do that. If you don’t have a personally-created GIF, you can use an online gallery and choose a GIF to share. In this article, I will use Giphy as an example, but the process will be similar to other image hosting services.

Share Gif link

Basically, for Facebook, we need the direct URL of the GIF image file with the extension ending in .gif. To do that, open the advanced tab on Giphy and copy the URL as per option Download GIF. To make sure it’s the right link for Facebook, just make sure it ends with .gif.

Now all you need to do is copy the link and paste it into the Facebook Status Update box. Facebook will automatically fetch the GIF file, and once it’s done, you can delete the pasted link in the box. Alternatively, you can write additional text and finally click the publish button. That’s it, your GIF will be shared with friends.

How to share GIFs on Twitter

Now switch to Twitter. Unlike Facebook, Twitter has a built-in search button and embeds GIFs directly using Giphy. If you searched for GIFs on Giphy, you can copy the link from the Twitter section and paste it into the search box. Finally, when your GIF appears, you can click tweet button.

Twitter

Twitter offers the option to directly upload a GIF file as an image, and if you have a personal GIF, you can upload it directly to Twitter instead of uploading it to Giphy first. But if you choose to use the GIF over and over on social media and blogs, it’s best to upload it to Giphy.

If you have shared any YouTube videos on your blog, you can relate it to GIF sharing because it is almost the same. You’ll have to take it embed iframe code and then paste it into the blog in HTML format. You can find the code in the share preferences and this is the first sharing option on both Imgur and Giphy. Just make sure you paste the HTML code in the HTML format and not the proper text format.

Embed iframe

Alternatively, if you have unlimited web space online, you can upload the Gif file directly to your server and then insert it just like any other image file.

Conclusion

So that’s how you can share GIFs on Facebook, Twitter and personal blogs Thanks to Google Plus, other social networking services have seen the potential in GIF sharing and introduced the feature In time. For now, all I expect is this feature to be included in WhatsApp and when it does, I will make sure I update the feature on the post.
