For those who use Microsoft’s email service, the redesign over a year ago to a modern new look is certainly a welcome change. However, one of the most glaring omissions since this redesign is the lack of support for the IMAP mail protocol, which causes many incompatibility issues with several email clients, including the Mail client. Thankfully, Outlook.com finally supports the IMAP mail protocol, and although Microsoft still recommends Exchange ActiveSync for syncing your email, that’s no longer necessary.
Let’s see how to set up Outlook.com on your Mac’s Mail app via IMAP.
First, open the Mail app on your Mac and go to its Preferences by clicking Letters menu on the menu bar and by selecting Interest. When the Preferences panel appears, click account tab (second one from the left).
Now click on the “+” sign at the bottom left of the dashboard to create a new account. On the email account dashboard, refer to your full name and Outlook.com email address, not your password (this is because Mail will try to connect to your account using the email protocol. POP3 and we want to avoid that). Then click Continue.
Since you didn’t write the password, Mail will display an error message instead.
Click Continue and a new account information panel will appear. This time fill in the following information:
- Account type: IMAP
- Description: Use any
- Incoming mail server: imap-mail.outlook.com
- Username: Your Outlook email address
- Password: Your password
When ready, click Continue and wait until the new account information panel appears.
There, you will have to introduce Outgoing Mail Server information as follows:
- Description: Use any
- Outgoing mail server: smtp-mail.outlook.com
- Use Authentication: Check
- Username: Your Outlook email address
- Password: Your password
When you’re done, click Continue and a subsequent screen verifies that all your information is correct. When ready, click Create to get your new Mail account online.
Hot Tip: If you happen to have an Outlook.com account already set up on Mail using the old method (Exchange ActiveSync), you don’t need to create a new account with these settings. Instead, simply select it on Mail’s Preferences and edit its information with the information above.
