How to Root Dual SIM Moto G And Install Custom Recovery

Fastboot Border Maker1

The Moto G is one of the best to come from Google’s short-term effort with Motorola. A sub-$200 phone in itself with a quad-core processor and 720p display is already impressive. But when you add the latest flavor of vanilla Android on top, things take a whole new level. As I told you, there’s a lot to love (and hate) about this phone.

If you are adventurous, like to install custom ROMs for enhanced functionality or just run stock ROMs with Xposed Mods, then you need to root.

The good thing is that the process isn’t nearly as complicated as some of the other non-Nexus phones out there, and you should believe me because I’ve rooted several of my own and my friends’ Android phones. If you are new to the concept of rooting completely, you should read about it first. Rooting will void your warranty, but if something goes wrong, there’s a way to lock the bootloader and restore the phone to factory settings, restoring your warranty in the process.

Like many other Android smartphones, rooting the Moto G is a three-step process.

  1. Unlock bootloader
  2. Custom recovery settings
  3. Super User Settings (root)

Depending on your skill set, it can take a few minutes to an hour.

Download to computer:

Motorola device drivers

Android ADB and Fastboot (alternative)

Superuser.zip file (for root access):

Download and copy to Moto G after completing step 1.

1. Unlock Bootloader

Note: Unlocking the bootloader will wipe everything on your device. Apps, files, settings, everything. So before proceeding, back up anything important.

Motorola has made the unlocking process very easy for you.

Once you have installed the drivers and extracted the ADB, pick up your phone and turn it off. Now hold the Volume Down + Power button combination for a few seconds and release. On release you will get the fastboot screen.

After you get this screen, connect your phone to your PC via USB.

Go to the folder where you extracted the ADB and Fastboot tools. In the folder named ADB tools, hold shift and right click. Select Command prompt opens here from the menu.

In the command prompt, enter the following command:

fastboot oem get_unlock_data

This will produce five lines of numbers that look like this:

fastboot oem getunlockdata

(bootloader) 3A45990485803606#54413933343030(bootloader) 4B465400585431303333000000#65E2(bootloader) FA0B4EDB4D26DC5E28505F2D318AA0B(bootloader) B1DF3#EE01C80 20F000000000 0000000(bootloader)

Right click on command prompt and click Select or Select all. Do a right click, click Copy then open Notepad and paste (Ctrl+V) all the content into it.

Now delete everything but the numbers in the five lines. And then remove the space between them. So all numbers need to be in one line.

Now, sign up for an account on the Motorola website. Then go to Motorola’s online unlock tool (haven’t closed the command prompt) and in the text box enter numbers with no spaces in between them.

Click Can my device be unlocked? button. The site will verify and you will see a button named Requires unlock key pop-up at the bottom. Agree to the terms and click the button. The unlock code will be mailed to you.

Copy the 20-digit unlock code you received in the mail, return to the command prompt, and enter the following:

fastboot oem unlock [insert the 20 digit code from the mail here]

Press enter and in a few seconds you will see Unlocking complete! and the phone will reboot. Don’t turn off that command prompt.

2. Install Custom Recovery

Now that the bootloader is unlocked, the long part of the process is over. The next step is to install a custom recovery. After you have reset your phone and signed in to your Google account turn off your phone and enter the fastboot screen again using Volume down + Power button combine. And reconnect your phone to PC.

You can now install three different types of custom recovery here. You have the option of installing a non-touch or touch-enabled CMW (ClockworkMod Recovery) version or a touch version of TWRP (Team Win Recovery Project). The installation process each was the same. I used TWRP because I’ve used it before and it’s easier to use on a touchscreen.

After downloading the recovery file, rename it the recuperation with the extension of .img. Copy the file to the adb tools folder.

Return to the command prompt and enter:

flash recovery fastboot recovery.img

Custom recovery is now flashing. In my case, TWPR started up in a few seconds on the phone.

3. Install Superuser (Rooting)

If you copied the link superuser.zip go to the root directory after unlocking is done, you don’t need to exit TWRP now.

If not, boot from recovery using restart select. Connect your phone to your PC and copy superuser.zip document.

Boot into the bootloader with Volume Up + Power combine. Use Turn down the volume button to navigate to The recuperation option and use Volume up to select it.

In CWM, go to Install zip from sdcard -> choose Super User.zip file -> reboot.

In TWRP, go to Setting -> choose Super User.zip -> reboot.

That’s it. Your phone is now rooted.

If you find Superuser or Super SU app on your phone, it means you are successfully rooted. Or try running an app like Titanium Backup.
