There’s so much you can do in Chrome that it sometimes feels like it’s an operating system of its own. That’s because it is. Well, something like that (hello Chromebook users). After things like image editing, add the ability to record a Chrome tab or the entire PC screen to the list.

There are two extensions that can help you with this. Let’s take a look.
1. Recording
The richest and most flexible option is Screencastify. Once you install the extension, you’ll need to give the app access to the front-facing camera and microphone. This is of course voluntary. But if you provide access, the extension will be able to record your voice and face, which will then be displayed in a small window on the bottom right.
If you’re recording instructions for someone, this is a great feature to turn on.
While Screencastify is free to use, you can only record 10 minutes of video with the free plan. And they will have the Screencastify watermark on the top right. To remove the restrictions, you will have to pay a one-time €20 fee.
To start recording, click Screencastify icon from the extension bar. You will see a drop-down list with a list of options.
From here, you can choose the weather you want to record only one tab, the entire screen, or the camera.
Below you will find options to turn on the audio, select the volume, enable the video, and specify the quality of the video. At the bottom, click Start recording button to start.
The recording will start and you will see a small preview pop up in the bottom right corner. At the bottom left, you’ll see options for captions and pointer display. The pop-up also allows you to pause the video.
To stop the video, click the widget button again and click Stop recording.
You should now see a preview of the video. From here, you can share the video, save it to a local disk, or to Google Drive.

2. TechSmith Snagit
If you are looking for a completely free and simpler option, then Snagit is for you. The limitation of Snagit is that it only allows you to save videos to Google Drive. Local storage is not supported. So if you don’t always have a stable broadband connection, then Snagit might not be for you.
Snagit supports both screenshots and screen recording videos. But only screencasts can record the entire screen.

To get started, click scabrous icon from the extension bar. A sidebar with options will display. Here, select Videotapes and from the pop-up, select the area you want to record. It can be the entire screen or any open window.
When you’re done, just click the extension icon again and click the square Stop button.
A video preview will show up and the extension will prompt you to sign in to your Google account so the extension can save the video to the “TechSmith” folder in your Google Drive.
Guide for life
If your friends or family keep telling you about the same web problem over and over, you know how frustrating it can be. Now, just send them a video tutorial.
